Anyway, did you build it to keep something specific back there or just random stuff? Why not use plywood instead of compressed? Cost?

BTW, it looks GOOD. I like the low profile.

Thnx dude ya ive been working hard to get it where i want it but the 4wd conversion will have to wait til i can find a good deal on it since it is very expensive and time consuming...

Lol actually i have them on the box currently but ive been debating on doing the sub box mod where its placed into the right cargo pocket area. I have a Kicker 750.1 pushing my two Fis.

Lol thnx dude ya ive been wanting this box forever and finally decided to take the plunge and build it. I decided on the particle board bc of weight and cost. I also talked to a few carpenters and they told me it would be a fairly good good choice for my needs. I made the box low profile so i can keep things in there without compromising too much space... I am going to be using it for camping, overland, hunting, and other random purposes.

Well finally decided to take my last day of Spring Break to finish the low profile cargo box build... the structure itself is complete and all that is left is for it to be painted and carpeted. I added the two sides that can be removed for storage underneath and i have spring loaded hinges. I will be getting some better day pics tom.

I bought some locks for the box but have decided that i dont think im going to use them but its still under debate.

Nice work on the cargo box. That's the exact height I want mine to be. Does it cover the outlet at all? Also do you have anything for the drawers to glide on? Will the particle board be strong enough for all the weight when it's loaded?

Sorry for all the questions, I just like your design and might have to look into this route. What was the final cost?

This was built to still be able to utilize the rear outlet so it sits right under the outlet socket. The drawers are currently just gliding on the base (wood on wood) but it was sanded so its smooth and has a small amount of room to play if needed. I didnt go with drawer slides since 36" or longer drawer slides run $150-250 a set.

The particle board should be strong enough for most applications since it is a shallow/small space. Im not sure on total weight it can hold but all the carpenters ive talked to told me it should work for anything i will need it for.

I kept this fairly cheap since i didnt want to spend alot on a cargo box that sat in the 4runner... Total Cost: $65 give or take a few dollars (particle board, wood screws (more then necessary), wood glue, and ring pull handles.

I still have about 200-225 screws left (bought a box of 250 just in case), 1/2 a sheet of particle board left, 1/2 bottle of wood glue left. This will probably be used in the future to test out a 10" sub in the side storage area. Not sure if ill be happy with one 10" sub in that small space.

The cargo box came out nice.

Just be careful with the particle board and moisture. If you get that stuff wet and you don't clean up the spill right away, the board will absorb the spill, swell up, and eventually crumble.

I know you mentioned painting it, and I think that would be a very good idea. Try and use some paint that is water resistant/proof.

YA ive been thinking about getting some clear waterproof to put over the paint or might just find some waterproofing paint and the carpet will help also.

Sry guys no updates lately.... been busy with building some guns and working alot. Been lazy and figuring out if i want to do more mods or not to it yet.

Have you done any more work on the cargo box? Making it water resistant? How does it handle all the gear in the drawers when they are pulled out?

No ive been working 72 hour weeks so i havent done much... i still havent waterproofed the drawers but they are working great with them completely filled with gear and various items.

as for the 4wd conversion, i was looking for the parts but lately ive been thinking about leaving it as is for now and may pick up another rig with 4wd since itll be much easier to start off that way.
