I just got my new toy for our road trips. We always tend to pack too much, especially during the holidays, so I picked this up today. We should have plenty of room now!! Of course I will not be leaving it on all the time, just for road trips.

I can pack light.........I just can't convince my wife to do the same. It is mainly for the holidays when we are going to her family's stuff and mine in Mississippi. We always have to make one big trip out of it, so we have to take all the presents and crap. Hopefully it will come into play if/when we have kids.

For our 15th anniversary, we went to Europe for 2 weeks. Carryon bags only, 1 each, plus a small daypack that would fit into the carryon if needed -- total weight under 20 lbs. for each of us.

The driver we had picking us up in Rome couldn't believe it.

Guess it helps when both of you travel a lot for work....you learn to pack light out of necessity.

I used to bring everything under the sun, but anymore when you take the big bird and the airline has to look through everything, it pays to pack light.

Looks good. How hard is it to get on and off? Any difficulty putting things in it?

I have a Thule basket and getting 5 gal gas can up and in it can be a wrestling match.
 
When we travel on a plane we can usually pack pretty light, but when we know we are going to have the truck we take what we think we might need.

It is really easy taking it off and putting it on. There are four clamps inside the box that release it, then it slides right off the cross bars. The really cool thing is that it opens from either side. It also has locks on both sides.
 
That looks better than I thought they would look......and I just decided what basket rack I was going to buy. I will have to re-think this. Do you know the weight of that box? At least you can keep stuff dry in that. Thanks for the pictures....looks good!
 
thanks for the compliments. It is one of those things you think looks good sometimes, but at other times, you think "why did I do that?" But again, it won't be on there all the time. Just when we are going to be taking trips.

I am not sure of the weight of the box, but it is pretty light. yakima.com might have those specs. I had thought about a basket, but it wanted to be able to keep everyting dry without having to buy one of those bags to go in the basket. My brother has 2 Yakima Rocket Box 16's on his Suburban and really likes 'em, so I figured this was the way to go.

It was only $430, and that was with everything. But when I say everything, I mean we took it out of the box and popped it right on the roof. There was no assembly. The mounting system is very easy for one person to do. I know there is some info on the Yakima page about that.

I know they can get tiresome on long car rides, but sticking them in a cargo box?

I really like the look of the new silver Yakima boxes, but black is definitely right for your truck. You'll have to give us the run down when you get around to using it (noise, gas mileage, how solid at high speeds, etc.)
 
It's funny you say that. I had told my wife she was going to ride up there because all she does in the car is sleep.

I road around on the highway today and there was zero wind noise. I was shocked. I was wtching it through the sunroof and it bounced just slightly, but then again it was empty. I can't wait to take a road trip.

looks good! One suggestion: alot of Yak-heads move the box over to the passenger side for easier loading/unloading--so you don't have a reach-over.

Anyway, that might be helpful and you can use the other side of the rack for something else like a bike or ??
The good thing about the boxes is you can fit snowboards or hiking poles, etc inside.

Just a preference thing, thought I'd throw it out there as a suggestion.

Is that as far back as it can go on the rack without being in the way of the back door?


I want to get a luggage box for long trips but I dont want it to completely cover the sunroof.

I was thinking of the 16s.
 
Yep, it opens from both sides. Because of the spoiler, that is as far back as it will go. When I open the hatch there is about 2 inches between the spoiler and the back of the box.

Yes, but the curb is on the passenger side and oncoming traffic is on the drivers side.

Just a suggestion, that's all.
