Yakima Loadwarrior W/ Extension on Yakima/Thule Crossbars

So I've thoroughly gone through trying to find pictures to no avail. I'm looking to see if anyone is running a Loadwarrior W/ Extension on aftermarket crossbars (Thule or Yakima).

I will probably be running these with the new Whispbar system (pics when I get it in), I emailed Yakima and they said because we can get 42" of spread on the bars it will work with the basket with extension. So any pics of the basket w/extension on a 5th Gen would be awesome.

When you search it shows only 3rd and 4th gens and a megawarrior on a 5th gen which is wider and shorter than the LW w/ ext, also shows Adio3x's but he didn't have the extension either. Thanks

I did have the extension for a little while before I got my gobi.

Thanks Andrew! Somehow I must have missed those scrolling through your build thread :redbrick:. Your pics are what gave me the idea that it was what I wanted to run. I'm going aftermarket bars though so I can possibly run bike racks outboard of the side rails in addition to the basket.

No problem! You can run the yakima bike racks ontop of the loadwarrior if you really wanted too. Instead of having to swap things out. They make extra crossbars that you can get order at REI.

My buddy ran this setup on his 3rd gen (didnt have an extension, but it works the same way)

I took some pictures this morning of my Megawarrior with extension, not sure if their the same length but gives you an idea. I have Thule Bars and it works perfectly fine with either Yakima or Thule bars.

Park your truck under the garage door and measure the distance between the rack and garage door/frame. I'm sure someone here can provide you with the height of the rack. It's the only way to be sure.

Thanks for the pic of the MegaWarrior. It's about 6-8" wider and with the extension about 12ish" longer (I'm just rough guessing from memory) but it does provide the idea I'm looking for.

As far as the question regarding fitting in a residential garage. Height of my stock truck is 72" though with crossbars and basket it will add about 8" of height so I'm at 80" and my garage is 84" so it should still fit and my pucker factor should still be in a comfortable range (we'll see, I'll definitely be measuring before I pull in the first time).

I was considering getting the LoadWarrior do you guys recommend swapping out factory crossbars or are those sturdy enough to install on? I have a 2012 4Runner and they do not seem all that sturdy for a 150lbs of cargo.

If I remember correctly the stock cross bars are rated for 60kg (132lbs) and the Yakima bars are rated to 75kg (165lbs). The stock bars will support most things you plan to stick up there but I did aftermarket bars for the width to support bike racks on the outsides of the basket more so than additional weight capacity (though the basket with extension weighs 40ish pounds so now you're down to 92lbs with stock bars). If you really plan to carry a lot of weight you may want to look into a permanent solution like Baja or Gobi. If you search 5th Gen Yakima Whispbar through bar. I wrote a thread about them when I put them on a couple years ago and it shows it with both my bike rack and basket. They're nice but pricey. Hope that helps in your decision.

I will have to check out the bars you mentioned, the ability to carry a little extra weight may come in handy I'd rather not be suddenly restricted when I need it. I considered something like a Gobi stealth but I cannot justify the cost since I will only use the rack during bird hunting season and an occasional trip. Toss two dogs and their kennels in the cargo area and all the room is suddenly gone. I saw the length on the Yakima was 44" long and our trunks we use to haul gear are 38" so it seems like a good choice for me. I can't imagine our trunks weigh more than 40-45lbs a piece so I will def consider upgrading the crossbars.

I use my Yakima LoadWarrior with the extension on the factory crossbars all the time for camping/fishing trips. I probably load 200ish lbs. up there. No complaints here.

Yeah, I'm 6'1" and I just stood on the back tire and opened the back door. Now that I have bump out sliders it's even easier.

The green tub in the photo I posted is about 38" long. It fits with room to spare in front of it. Since the support bar is moveable I push it back up against the tubs to help keep them in place. Plenty of room in front of the bar for camp chairs, bags, etc.

The only thing I would be concerned about is wind noise. The Thule/Yakima baskets are LOUD. Especially since it will be just behind the back of the moon roof. I bet [MENTION=50186]adio3x[/MENTION] can confirm since he's had both the Yakima and a Gobi.

I had a Thule system on my 3rd gen and it was like sitting on top of a turbine engine. There's something about the fairing not being all the way up to the windshield.

I had the load warrior w/ extension on Yakima cross rails first, now i have it on the factory rails. Maybe it has to do with the exact position of the basket, but mine is not loud at all (unloaded). The wind noise coming from the basket is no louder than the wind noise caused by simply rolling down my windows. I notice it a little more on a particularly windy day or when there is a lot of crosswind, but even my wife doesn't complain about it....and thats saying something. Loaded up...depending on whats up there, how tall it is and how its positioned, it can get pretty loud.

Yep, the yakima is LOUD! On the hwy you get a high pitched sound, kind of like a train, even worse if you don't have the extension in. My gobi doesn't make any noises at all, but then I'm losing my hearing from rolling with the windows down on 295 mud terrains lol.

Length of LoadWarrior ext

Does anyone know the actual length of this extension? Or the actual overall length of the LoadWarrior with the ext in? I see several sizes on Amazon and even on Yakima's website! from 18" to 20" to 22.5".

I have the factory cross bars on my 2015 4Runner SR5. I think I read here that it's no issue to use them with this rack.
