Yakima Loadwarrior W/ Extension on Yakima/Thule Crossbars

Hi gang,

Sorry to bring up an old post, but it is relevant to my question, and I don't have enough posts yet to start a new thread.

I am most likely going to purchase a 2016 Trail Premium soon, and want to see what options I have using my existing rack systems.

On my Subaru Outback, I have two configurations on different sets of crossbars. I can swap back and forth in about 30 minutes. There are brackets for the awning on both setups;

Configuration A:
- Thule 450 Crossroad set w/50" crossbars
- Subaru Heavy Duty Cargo Basket (Same as Yakima LoadWarrior)
- Yakima LoadWarrior 18" basket extension
- FourTreks Modular ARB awning mount
- FourTreks LED Lightbar mount
- ARB 2500 Awning
- OPT7 32" LED Lighter

Configuration B:
- Thule 450 Crossroad set w/58" crossbars
- (2) Yakima Fork Lift bicycle racks
- (2) Thule Hull-a-Port Folding Kayak Mounts
- RhinoRack Foxwing awning mount
- ARB 2500 Awning

It looks like I can move both of my existing configurations from my Outback over to the 4Runner without any problems. I might decide later that I need a Hull-a-Vator due to the extra height of the 4Runner.

How high does the sunroof flip up above the roof? If I mounted the basket further forward, I want to know if it would clear the raised sunroof like it does on my Outback.

And for an even wackier thought, is there any way to use one of the full-length rack mounts (Gobi, FrontRunner, etc.) so that I could add a third crossbar and another basket extension resulting in a full-length 80" (2.1M) basket? I'm thinking I could get some longer crossbars, mount the bike racks on the basket like I used to do before having the kayaks, and then mount the kayaks outboard of the basket, eliminating the need for two configurations. Like I said, a wacky idea...

hey Steve, no worries resurrecting an old(er) thread with information that pertains to it! (actually makes it easier for ppl to find similar info consolidated in one spot than many anyway)

the sunroof tilts up somewhere between 1.375" and 1.5" so you should have no problem in that regard.

speculation on using something like the gobi front mounting bracket to provide support for a super-extended roof basket (if you can even get the mounts by themselves - I'm not sure):
I think it could be done, but I think would require to fab some kind of top plate to sandwich the roof rack in between (if that makes sense...) and maybe some other modifications for fitment.

to elaborate: you can see where the front mount (in the attached pic i stole from the DIY Gobi install thread) shows a top plate welded to the rack itself. so if you can get the 2 other pieces for the gobi front mounts, then a simple rectangular plate with holes sized for the bolts could be the ticket for your 80" ultra-rack.

with some ingenuity i think you could def make it happen.

Perfect! Thanks, that's about the same as my Outback, and it isn't even close. Looking at the rails at the Cleveland Auto Show yesterday, I'd say the T4R rails are within 1/4" of the same height as my OBXT, so no change in clearance.

Ultra-Rack; I like that! I figured I'd have to piece something together. Worst comes to Worst, I could make a riser similar to the Gobi/FrontRunner foot, maybe even screw it down like one of the racks, and then weld a square opening on top like the Thule clamps and hold it in place with a retaining bolt.

I'm considering that route for a couple of reasons: It would get my fairing up closer to the windscreen (but not too close - I found that out with the Outback and it sounded like a train!) and second, to get the LED lightbar closer to the front of the roof for more foreground illumination.

hey, are you using the loadwarrior stretchnet with the extension? if so, any issues?

after reviewing low profile options, built in, etc, and seeing the price range all the way up past $1100, I decided to go with my original plan, factory rails, plus loadwarrior+extension and just plan on removing it when i'm not using it for longer periods of time (ie winter) to deal with the rare case that i can't fit in an underground garage.

Also it helps that my REI Dividend + 20% off coupon made it $0. (Except the $100 for factory rails)

I use my Yakima LoadWarrior with the extension on the factory crossbars all the time for camping/fishing trips. I probably load 200ish lbs. up there. No complaints here.

I use the net with no problems at all. I also have a rooftop cargo/gear bag and set it right in the rack. Kinda like it better than just the net. Everything is covered.

I do have the loadwarrior with extension on stock rails. No complaints. I also remove it for the winter.

Nice. Thats a smart move, I'll check it out. I have a bunch of dry bags from moto camping that I would likely pack stuff into before packing it up on top.

I use the net with no problems at all. I also have a rooftop cargo/gear bag and set it right in the rack. Kinda like it better than just the net. Everything is covered.

No, I do not have the LoadWarrior net, I do have another brand net that works well (I use it on my cargo tray) but I prefer strap down my cargo on my roof top. I may go with a Raingler net in a near future.
