Im picking up a set of yakima racks for my 3rd gen. Ive got to buy new bars and am torn on what size to get. Any of you guys have pics of your setup with yack racks installed? What about the wind fairing? Are Yakima bars any louder than the current factory racks that are on mine currently?

I run 48"s, I think they're perfect but I don't need them to stick out a mile. As for the wind fairing, I have an older flat squared one, don't care for how it looks but it stretches over the front factory x bar.
I kept the stock x-bars because I like to use them for my load warrior rack, which sits too high on the yak bars. The yaks are super easy to take off, the oem's not as much so I elected to keep them on.
As for the noise, holy carp they are real loud without the fairing but not sure if some of that was from having the oem's on there in addition.
If you're not sure on size you can always go big and cut them down later.

On an early 2nd gen (so my rails only go up to the back of the rear doors), my bars are just standard 48's. If you're going to be holding a lot of stuff or want to be able to access it easier, go with 58's. Those should still fit well inside the mirror width so you should be fine for getting in the garage and such. I tend to put my bike mounts on the bar ends outside the yakima towers, which makes it easier to get to without climbing up on the running boards or rear tires.
I wouldn't bother with the wind fairing, but if you end up wanting a full size one let me know. I haven't used it in 15 years and would sell it for cheap. I don't get wind noise on my 4runner but on some vehicles it does. One of my parents Audi's does, but adding one of the little things that clips right on the bar (a few inches wide, and shaped like a comet) was enough to kill the noise.
The problem with the Yakima bars is that they are round, so the air is spread far apart and then thrown back together. It's nearly the opposite of a good wing design that cuts through the air/wind. OTOH, it has strength.

If I was to use the 54" bars there wouldn't be much to grab on to when pulling myself up or much of a bar left to lean into while tying boats. With 54" bars I wouldn't be able to haul three boats either as I have to transfer one cradle outboard of the tower.
Since the pic I have transplanted my Yakima system onto my 3rd gen T4R.

Thats kind of my thoughts. Im going to check out ebay and see whats available.
Ill probably wait untill I get the racks installed to decide if I need a faring.

48" bars here. They howl like no other at any speed over 35 MPH. They are seriously noisy.

That was enough for my parents, and without as much drag as a larger fairing. And quite a bit cheaper too. The crossbars are here on the same page Roof Rack Accessories | Yakima
I ended up buying 58" bars. Ill get them installed this weekend and see if I like the length. If not ill cut them down. Im going to remove the large factory bars but I may not remove the small ones that go against the roof. Im afraid my paint may be messed up underneath those.

i know this thread is old, but i wanted to update it with my results that might help some folks in the future when deciding on yakima racks.
I installed 58" bars and a 44" fairing, and I have NO howling or anything like it. In fact, I can't even tell a difference. The fairing makes all the difference.
Whatever size bars you get, get a fairing.

Never needed a fairing with my bars. Quiet as can be. Discontinued by yakima a while back. Kind of an old pic
