This guy lives in an area where it snows maybe 2 inches per year.
 
4wd all the way in the snow, the far left lane here doesn't get plowed and turns into the 4wd and AWD only lane of ice. Pretty nice haha. Screw traffic haha
 
What did you end up getting? I'm working on my points too, haha. What kind of fishing? Bass? Or do you target any edible fish in NC? There is a lake up here with Rockfish!! Ive been waiting for my TRD I put a downpayment on, but I will only believe its coming when I get it..these dealers scare me with their promises..
 
I have been in this situation before when I got my boat. At the time I had a 2WD Dodge Nitro. Towed great but occasionally had trouble pulling boat from water unless conditions were perfect.
The one thing I have learned from this is to consider what you are asking yourself. If it is even a question that you may or may not need the 4x4, then why not go for it? It is easier to not use the 4x4 95% of the time than to be stuck without it and needing it 5% of the time.
I know finances are always important as they should be, but I think practicality and use are just as important.
 
4WD is always nice to have but if you're confident that you want use it then definitely go for the 2WD. I just got my 98 a couple months ago and haven't used he 4WD yet but I'm hoping I get to

I would think there should be more 4runner's out there to choose from something in between these two rigs which are vastly different price wise, to potentially get you a 4wd without payments for example! Or hold out until you find something that would meet all your needs functionally and financially..

A 4wd may be able to get you to a secret fishing hole in the backwoods that a 2wd couldnt.. and they definitely seem to hold their value better even if you never use it, it'll pay you back when you sell it.

Looks like the OP hasn't posted in a while, but thought I'd give my .02c. As others have stated, I would keep searching for a 4th gen that is 4wd and within your budget. That way you still have no payment AND 4wd. I own a 3rd gen, and am currently in the market to upgrade to 4th gen so I know they are out there. Over here in California the prices are a bit higher though! :ohwell:

I did not go with my neighbors only because it is 2WD. I'm looking for 12/13's now.

I'm noticing on the forum a preference for 4th gens. Is there a specific reason why that is? Based on the forum 4th gens stop at 2009 and 5th gens stop at 2012. So logically 2013 would be 6th gens?

2014-current was just a face lift. It was not a new re-design, thus the same 5th gen.
 
My 2cents...If you "need" 4x4 then get it. Down here in the South, 99% of the people that think they need it don't. And, most of them are just plain abusive to their vehicles. An old saying I've heard all of my life (I'm 43 years old) is that all that 4x4 does is get you stuck further in the woods...I knew a guy North of Atlanta that had an early '70s Ford pickup that was just about the size of the original Big Foot. He would idle around the mud holes just watching everybody have their fun dirtying up their undercarriages. 2 or 3 times a day, someone would get stuck and he would come idling up and pull the cable out of his pto driven winch and winch people out from 50 feet away. His truck was spotless. I can't recall him ever pressing down on the accelerator until he hit the road to go home.

I resemble that remark and find it rather ridiculous that we have to even be "Post Whores" before we can start our own threads. I am on the Rav4 and Tacoma forums for a long time but now I have to be a noob because I just ordered a 4R. Too bad I can't honestly be much help to anyone here with the 4Rs because I am here needing some help while I await delivery but I can't even ask for the help I would like YET!
