Yes, Another F-ing tire question!

So here’s the deal. I’m putting 285/70R17 Nitto Terra Grapplers on my 2005 V6 4x4. It came with 265/65R17 when we bought it at 94k. I immediately replaced those worn out tires with 265/70R17 terra grapplers. Fast forward 3 years and 60k miles. My wife and I are very happy with how the tires held up but it’s getting time to replace.

Before I pull the trigger I’d like some feedback on going up the tire size. How much did the tires effect drivability? Does the trans shift normally? How is the acceleration with the different final drive? How much is the speedometer off?

I’ve only put bigger tires on old Toyota’s(FJ80, 2nd gen, 1st gen). A friend of mine put 33” on his 2016 Tacoma and he had to put 4.88’s it to make it drivable again. It wouldn’t shift right, couldn’t tow well and was really slow. So Im not sure what to expect on a newer more computer controlled 4runner. I’m hoping gearing isn’t necessary. TIA!

It'll be just fine, buy the tires.

My V8 didnt care at all with 33s. V6 isnt much different.

I just put 295/70/17's on my 04 and they are awesome tires,only noticed a slight difference in gearing from the previous 265's.

I can't speak to the V6 and the transmission, but having just recently put 33's on a yota for the first time (never made it to 33's on my 3rd gen) I can say I wish I did it sooner. My V8 barely noticed, but I'm pretty good about taking it out of OD when climbing mountain passes and stuff.

I think load rating is really important to ride quality, as my LR D 285 Duratracs are more forgiving than the LR E tires I've had before. They're still stiff enough to not worry me off-road though, so that's nice.

Hopefully those TRD wheels mean you won't need spacers. You'll probably still need to cut stuff though, but it's not a big deal. Your spare will probably fit deflated, which may or may not be an issue for you. I carry a Vair compressor, so it's not a huge problem.

Yes, the speedo will be off, as I've noticed mine is about 3-5mph off depending on speed. Closer to 70 means I'm closer to 75, as there is some science and math in there. That affects the mileage too, but meeeeh.

The TRD wheels stick out a little farther than the stock ones did. I had to remove the mud flaps to keep it from rubbing. I’m assuming I may need to cut a little inner fender liner and possibly the body mount. It does have a 3” toytec leveling kit so hopefully that helps.

I have 265/70/17 and I'm in the same boat, I really wish they made more options in 275/70/17 because that would be the perfect size for me, but there's very little out there that isn't load E which is way overkill for my uses.

I'm rocking 285/70/17 on my v6. I don't have any driveability issues. 3" lift had to cut and move fender liners and chop the body mount so I didn't rub when flexing.

Well I pulled the trigger and bought the 285/70R17 Terra Grapplers. Can’t wait to get them on and post up some pics!

The truck rides awesome! Honestly I didn’t notice a difference drivability wise. I took my air saw to the front of fender liners to stop the rubbing. Tiny bit of trimming still required but it wasn’t nearly as big a deal as I thought it would be. Last time I aligned it I moved the Caster as far forward as it would go. This probably helped with clearance behind the tire since no trimming was needed. Anyone considering 285/70R17 DO IT!
