Usually GOBI sends a tape with the roof rack for that exact location. I am not sure if that’s a 3M or not!

I have a membership with a local car wash. I rung my lifted 4Runner through with Gobi and Prinsu racks a couple times a week. This car wash is the newest one in my area and they have a feature where they can select to have the top roller not roll the top of my 4Runner. It's pretty cool. Almost zero risks of any issues related to the roof rack.
That being said, there is always a risk and I am willing to take that risk to have a clean vehicle all the time. So far no issues with the Gobi or Prinsu full length.

Like other's have said it does ship with a clear strip. It doesn't look wide enough at first, but it did the trick for me.
TIPS:
- Since the tape is curled up, I stretched it out on a flat surface for 24 hours before applying.
- Use a water/dish soap solution and a squirt bottle to help with the application. It will give you more time to position the tape.
- I also purchased a cheap bondo applicator thingy (it's like a soft putty knife) from the local auto parts store to squeeze out the bubbles.
You may still want to get the 6" or 8" tape anyway and put behind the ladder. It will add a layer of protection to the paint as there isn't that much room for the toe of your shoes.
