First off I appoligize for another "help me find the right tire for me" thread, yet here I am. About me: I have a Daystar lift on stock tires, I'll be doing 99% on road driving. I love the look of a meaty/aggressive tire but don't want to sacrifice too much on road behavior. And lastly I'd like to be in the 32-33" range. I'm aware that trimming will be needed for 285's and i have no problem with that. I have a V6 so I guess i'm not looking for too heavy of a tire either. Oh, and I have the stock 17 wheels at this time. Basically I'm going for looks over function (don't hate me, i'm just being honest). Suggestions please! Thanks in advance for any help.

BTW for all of you eBay tire shoppers; eBay is discounting tire purchases $100 or 15% until Apirl.

Nitto TG's and Toyo Open Countrys seem popular and well behaved on the street. The Firestone Destinations and the Revos are also good.

You hit on a key point, tire weight and I would add that rolling resistance is another. The V6's are strong but I don't know if it could handle stock gears and 285's without a good bit of 5-4-5 shifting.

Considering 90+% on-road, ride and mpg being a concern I would consider a nice 255/75/17. They'll ride/drive great in the 40psi range, they're 32+", they won't hydroplane unless you do something crazy and finally they'll fill up the wheel wells. It'll have a tough, 'expedition vehicle' look. The final points are you can carry a full-sized spare and they're cheap! If you want cheap and awesome looks there's the Jeep BFG M/T's. Several here have used those.


Obviously I have myself talked into this:biggrin2: This is what I am going to do. I will most likely end up with Bridgestone D695's, Firestone Destinations or GYSA's.

I would also recommend you look at Michelin LTX A/T-2 and Bridgestone Dueler REVOs. (Michelins have always had low rolling resistance...from what i hear.)
 
Chris , are you planning to lift more also ?

Seatown, Do you have the DS lift at all 4 corners or just front lift spacer ?
 
CJ3Flyr- thanks for the insight. I've been back and forth on the 255/75/17 BFG's with my main concerns being the width. I beleive the few that have them state that their road mannerisms especailly on the freeway tend to react negatively to cracks. My 4runner already wanders on the freeway and I'd hate to exacerbate the issue. I do love the size, tread patter, and most of all price on them though.

You're thinking that a 285/70/17 will be too much for a V6? What if it was a lighter 285 like a Revo or Destination? I'm digging the 11.5 wide tread; gives a nice stance (with spacers).

THai - thanks for heads up on the Michelins, it's very good to know and take into consideration if i'm going to go the 285 route.

I too have concerns about wandering etc. Having played with many tires over the years IMHO it's unfair to assign the wandering to the 255/75 size. IMHO it's more about the M/T tread design. Most of the 255/75's are 44psi max tires (I will insist on a tire with 44psi max). Having said that the correct pressure would be in the 38-42psi range which would provide enough sidewall stiffness that sway shouldn't be a huge problem. At the correct pressure and with a more favorable tread design I think the size would be a great size. In fact I might argue that all other things equal a wider tire might track more especially if there's minor water puddling involved.

Will it sway more than the stock 265/65? Of course. Will it track more? It's hard to know. The last vehicle I messed with was a reg cab, 2wd, shortbox, Dodge 1500. The 305/??/17's were M/T's and miserable in terms of tracking (and everything else). It's a simple work truck that actually works. I put some LR-D Yok G051's set to 50psi on it in a 245/70/17 size. The higher pressure, narrower tires ride about the same, due to lighter unsprung weight I'm guessing and it doesn't track at all. It's infinitely better in the rain too...

I have driven 3 different older Lincoln Navigators over the years. Those run a 255/75. They rode fine, had adequate stability, didn't track excessively etc.

On highway stability: Did you get an alignment after your Daystar went in? You want to be near the max on the spec for positive caster. The other thing is my swaybar bushing mod (link in my sig). It helps with stability and wander appreciably.

I don't plan on any more lift for now. I am very happy. Spaceman squeezed on 275/70/17's with no lift and had minimal issues. That tire is exactly the same height as a 255/75/17. I think I should be fine. To do all over again I would have purchased 1" net lift spacers rather than my .75" net lift spacers. I am so close to ideal (for me) that I probably won't change anything.

Thanks many times over; you've alleviated my concerns with the 255's. Using the free shipping and eBay discount i'll be able to pick 4 of them up for under $400; that just sounds fun to say, doesn't it?

I had an alignment done at the time my lift was installed. you bring up a good point regarding caster; when the new tires are put on i'll inquire and request a more positive caster.

oh, I forgot to clarify didn't I? I'm going with the 255/75/17 BFGs. I'm going to try to work over tire rack tomorrow as they might be throwing me some credit due to a rotor issue otherwise i'll be buying them off eBay this weekend. :D

Sounds good. As I suggested before the M/T's will wander a bit more than another tread pattern (highway or A/T). I think playing with pressures will help. Considering your on-road usage really consider the swaybar bushings, it will help :bigok:



I like my Salsa color especially in certain light... Clear days with the sun low in the sky it's gorgeous! I have a while to go before I do the tires but you know I'll post it:D

Picked them up!!

Pulled the trigger 3 days ago for the 255's. Purchased 4 for $371 w/ free shipping off eBay through Discounttire direct. I'lll post some pics when I get them mounted! I do not have wheel spacers though; will that be an issue or just look weird?

My guess is you'll have no rubbing until you add the wheel spacers. Then you may have the easily correctable minor rubbing many report on the front side of the front wheel wells.

I don't think it'll look goofy at all.

IMHO, a plus for continuing to pursue the spacers will be a little wider track, better looks and slightly improved stability. In my mind the small effort required to relocate the inner fender liner a bit is worth the benefits of the spacers

i'm now considering buying a set of Helo HE835 wheels instead of spidertrax; the price is about $300 more then the spacers will be and i'm guessing i'll be able to sell my old tire/wheel set for at least $300. Anyways, the question i have is whether or not the wheel will provide the same effect as the spacer. Here are the specs:

17x8 (8.5 is the max width for the BFG 255's)
backspacing: 4.5
offset: 0

0 offset should be perfect. It'll be wider than stock by 30mm/side, 60mm total. 1.25" spacers on stock rims yield a positve offset of 1.75mm/side.

Bottom line is stock rims and spacers would give you a 3.5mm wider track than the rims you're considering. 3.5mm is nothing though... Go for the rims:D

Thanks Chris! I found a deal on them for $500 out the door; lately i've been finding that i can justify just about anything...and I don't think that it's a good thing. :D
 
update

Update: Tires are in and waiting on my back porch. I ordered a set of Helo 835 17 inch wheels at a steal of a price that will arrive in about 10 days (in Florida Warehouse). I've owned a truck and this is my 2nd SUV, but it's my first time every upgrading tires and wheels so the excitement is building up! I'll post pics as soon as I get back from the shop.
 
Installed!

I've already posted these pics under the 4th gen forum, but i figured I'd might as well finish the thread. It's been 4 days now with the setup and I could not be more pleased. I'm still in need of slight front inner fender trimming, but no rush as it is minimal.
