I pull my first stuck truck, 2012? Dakota today, he saw I had back into the lake and tried to copy me. He drop into the first step and couldn't get out. After watching him gas it for a few minutes In offered a hand.

I was trying to figure out where this scary Pucker Pass is... you're talking Long Canyon? He was scared by Long Canyon? That's a fawking road. They blade it multiple times a year. I have seen grey hair grandmas driving that road in their Subarus.

This is very true. They had no idea what they were doing... They were some of Alabama's finest. These are the only two pictures I have from that day with them. Maybe it will help explain...

They really weren't. The road is a gravel dirt clay mud mix and was a little slick, but not bad at all. Off to the side it can get kinda muddy, but also not that bad really. They were some very special people. I think they were almost trying to get stuck...

I had the opposite experience years ago in CO, my 98 taco walked over obstacles my friend's wrangler had to make a couple tries on. I was locked and he wasn't, but I found the longer wheel base to be the deciding factor. He had to get his whole jeep over at once, my taco had the front wheels past by the time the rear wheels had to contend with it.

He had at tires and I had bald street radials.

I had opposite experience of you. But it was a 4 door Rubicon, locked with sway bars disconnected, lift and 35's. He walked trail with ease, while the rest of us had to work a little harder.

As much as I hate to admit it, the rubicon is probably the most capable stock vehicle money can buy right now. I wonder why Toyota doesn't offer a comparable vehicle in north america anymore (dual locked with a solid front axle). There are A LOT of rubicons on the road where I live.
If only Toyota would come out with a replacement for the FJ cruiser that has a solid axle, dual lockers, and a removable hardtop like the first gen 4runner...

My best guess, Brandon, is that jeep dominates the niche so well that Toyota wouldn't sell enough vehicles to justify it. From what I've read, that's why the fj is being discontinued: they just aren't selling enough.

The late 90s was the peak of the suv craze and that's why our 3rd gens are so awesome: the market wanted offroad capable daily drivers and out of that the third gen was born. The suv thing died down a bit as the industry started realizing that what most people really wanted was tall cars that *look* off-road capable but fill the role of a minivan.

And its the exact same vehicle from the year 2000. Toyotas issue is they dont do much R&D. They are releasing the same tried and proven but tired vehicles year after year.

The new Tacoma got horrible ratings from consumers. They want better tech, comfort and luxury. They dont care about how reliable or how well they do offroad. I think it was the lowest consumer rating of all cars for 2015.

After saying all that still wont buy much other than toyotas for my offroad and daily driving needs. Now when you need your speed fix, Toyota has really dropped that ball. Waiting on the BMW Toyota Supra, but wont be that cost effective for the mid level buyer.

I roll with a Jeep crew who all drive Wranglers and XJs. They always scratch their heads wondering how a Yota can keep up with them on the trails. Then they get jealous because I ride with windows up and A/C blasting, while they have their tops/windows down and face masks on to prevent from inhaling dirt. They can't run their A/C because their engines overheat. It actually happens quite often in their Jeeps, strangely enough.

I must say though, the solid front axles rock off road. But, the short wheel base of the Wrangler...I dunno how many times I've almost seen my buddies roll over.

When I was younger I my uncle took me up some roads in his '00 4Runner that has signs that said "No Jeeps" because they were prone to rolling over.

Nowadays though I think the newer Jeeps have a wider wheel base or something to compensate for this. The Rubicons are common in Sacramento since we're the closest urban area to the Rubicon and other major trails. But then again, for every one Jeep I see on the road I see 5 4Runners. I even passed a "club" of 4Runners this weekend coming down from the Sierra Buttes, they were all decked out and ready for some camping and such. Wouldn't be surprised if that was someone from these forums lol!

So true. I know so many folks that are 100% against owning a minivan but will gladly drive an SUV. I think it's funny, they don't want to be seen as the typical mom driving a minivan but they are driving what the typical mom from my generation drives!

You can make a suv look cool, you lift a minivan and put mt on it you pretty much end up with broken parts and people laughing at you.

and I have had people ask....why do you refer to your Toyota as a truck

I usually refer to mine as a truck. Most people refer to it as 4runner or toyota. I never had anyone say suv.

Mine is a tall station wagon, with manual. Fits the family, the dog and the crap plus goes bumpity bump thank you very much.
