There were multiple times I was out with my Jeep buddies and crossed paths with a 4Runner group. They always yell, "Hey! You're in the wrong group!" Haha. The almost rollovers I've seen were mostly due to short wheelbase. The newer Jeeps are pretty cool, especially the unlimited. I still want an 04-06 Jeep LJ though...but those are so $$$ still.

For pure off-road, I think the wrangler is a better platform, but for a Swiss army knife, the 4runner can't be beat. No other vehicle, save possibly the land cruiser, makes a better DD/offroad/camping/ road trip/work truck/expedition rig. The nexus of comfort, capability, size, reliability, versatility, even fuel economy (compared to the alternatives) found in the 3rd gen 4runner can't be beat by any other platform, especially not a wrangler.

More than any other reason I love having stock bumpers because it always surprises people that my 4Runner can go where it goes without looking modified much at all. Factory locker helps.

My father-in-law was over the other night and was checking out my new-to-me '03 that I had just finished installing the Toytec lift. He broke out the tape measure and compared it to his '07 JK. He's running 35's and I'm not sure what lift, but he's got at least $5k invested in it after he bought it new and he only had 1/2" more ground clearance at where ever he was measuring from. He was red in the face when I told him that it was still on the stock tires and I planned on running 33's and that with tires and lift I would be in it less than $2k after I bought it for less than $7k. He's got almost 75,000 miles on his and just bought his 2nd extended warranty because he used the first one so much. That's when I told him that mine had 240,000 miles on it and after I replaced the t-case (it had no oil in it when I bought it) and the timing belt, I can't find anything else wrong with it. I've owned jeeps in the past and have helped him work on his a lot. I've got to say that having never been around a Toyota before, I am very impressed with this 4-Runner, both in how well it has held up with so many miles and with how capable it is with minimal modifications. I'm more impressed in it than I am with my fil's heavily modded JK, but then again my toy isn't trail rated.

Around here (SW Missouri) if you offroad at all you WILL have fine scratches down the side of the truck. Funny, most of the time I see a Jeep set up like this it is just as shiny as this one (well, maybe a little door ding from the mall.) Scratches are first thing I look for - a badge of honor (or the sign of a fool!).
A stock 3rd gen is pretty capable. A few weeks back I took a couple of guys through a pretty tough trail in the national forest. One was a stock 99 with street tires. He didn't have any problems except ground clearance in a few spots. I believe he did have a locker.
Only a moron would try that with street tires!

Let me start by saying, I am a novice and just started to 'wheeling' after building up the t4r for about 1.5 yrs. (tundra/ LC 8 lift, duratracs, etc etc thanks to this forum)
I went to check out Joshua Tree nation park this weekend, and I thought it was no more than 3/10 (difficulty level) in some areas, but I found these videos of Acura MDX at the same trails making it look like 8/10. It's quite entertaining to watch actually. He is so lucky that he didn't pop a tire and got stuck in the middle of desert somewhere.

When I was looking for a new to me vehicle I was at a dealership and ask for a vehicle I could beat on some trails; something a little older. The salesman showed me 2 different MDXs. I pointed to a cherokee classic and the 4runners he showed me a JKU with a 3inch lift 20s and white wheels. Then started talking about the MDX again. I laughed at him and left, he had two 4runners on the lot. Didnt even talked about them even if that is where I was when I first walked in.

What's really bad is most of that trip I didn't have the locker locked. Maybe the last 25%? Oh, and I think I have you on video saying something like "stock 4runner going where jeeps are scared to go." LOL
Where is this video you speak of..
Seems like most JK owners are scared of trails. I asked one this weekend 4inch lift on 35" white 20s. Where are the good trails he looked offended I asked him.

OK, keep in mind I was by myself in my Runner, my commentary can be a little annoying, at least to me. The noise I keep talking about did end up being a busted shock. Drivers rear sheared off the top stud, of course it was 19 years old. Now I've got OME 890's and Bilsteins in the back. Eibach's and Bilsteins in the front as well.

You copied a good part of the first post with nothing additional...... whats the point in that? ? ?So I asked a coworker to weld on some sliders for me. He looked at me and says, "you know what those are for right? Why would you off-road with that.
