I think that video pretty much answers the original question. A stock 4Runner is pretty capable, even with street tires.

I didnt need it answer haha, I have taken 3rd gens out and know what it can do. I love my 4runners. Ill be going out with a guy who has a new jk never offroad and talks smack on my "mommy wagon".

Which video?

To be totally honest, I am a real newbie when it comes to offroad driving. I've done it many times on tame terrain and a couple times on some tough stuff. I've always thought Jeeps were really good platforms, with the short wheel base, solid axle up front, relatively light weight, etc. With the same driver, are our 3rd gens really a match to, or superior to, many of the Jeep platforms? Of course, let's assume equal mods, or equal money spent on mods.

What are you comparing? E-locked T4R 3rd gen vs. Jeep Unlimited Rubicon? If so....the Jeep is much more capable.

Oh and short wheelbase is no longer considered a benefit overall for a trail rig. Most people think 110-120" is preferable.

Stock for stock and the same driver, your base model Wrangler isn't any more capable than a 4Runner. It'll get up some stuff the 4Runner can't climb, and vice versa, depending on whether the specific obstacle favors a shorter or longer wheelbase. An elocked 4Runner will probably make it through more stuff than a base Wrangler. On the other hand, a Rubicon is super-capable with front and rear lockers and a low range tcase and will mop the floor with any stock 4Runner, elocker or not.

Start adding mods and it all becomes meaningless though. Lift, tires, lockers, etc, all game changers. It might be a little cheaper to mod the Jeep than a 3rd gen 4Runner? Dunno. I guarantee it's cheaper to mod my 1st gen than to mod a Jeep, that's all I care about (because #brokeassrustyYotaguy).

This does not factor in reliability. Jeeps break more parts and have more engine trouble, in my experience.

Agree with most of this...only thing I'd add....it will be a LOT more expensive to mod the 4Runner to make it as capable as a Rubicon Unlimited.

I had an old Cherokee with terrible electrical problems, just total junk. So does the Rubicon still have electrical issues? I don't care how good something handles off road, if it isn't reliable electrically then I won't be taking out far.

It's a Chrysler product (under the Fiat umbrella). That should tell you everything you need to know about reliability, LOL.

Jeeps have a solid front axle. That does give quite an advantage when it comes to Rock Crawling.

But for normal off-road use. I prefer the 4runner over my Jeep.

The older jeeps with the leaf springs in front and rear look like a MISERABLE rife off road. Every time I see one it's bouncing around on football sized rocks. And by bouncing I don't mean a cushy bounce. It looks like a skateboard riding on pebbles. Most of the ones I see on trails are open open and they get crossed A LOT.

I just had a great idea which might revolutionise mudding. Bring an inflatable bladder that you put under the veehickle then inflate it with a compressor. The whole veehickle lifts up and then you just tow it like a boat.
