Your Daily Reminder to Get a DashCam

Another one we caught with our camera in our old Land Cruiser.

This was on the freeway, and the left passenger side front wheel fell off doing about 65 mph.

I got the A119 with the GPS. After a few weeks it stopped working and I found out it was the GPS not working so I removed it and plugged the cable straight into the camera. The only down side to this camera I have found is that it doesn't have a motion sensor so it won't turn on if your car gets bumped in a parking lot. Also the buttons aren't very distinct to the touch so when you want to hit the save button while driving it is a pain to have to look for the button, especially when it's hidden behind the rear view mirror.

It actually does have a motion sensor. It's under the Menu screen, you have to stop the recording in progress, then click Menu, and scroll through that until you see the Movement setting (link to manual).

The thing that confuses me is that in the manual, it says not to have on the motion sensor activation while driving...so do you have to turn it on / off every time you park the car? Seems a little ridiculous.

By the way, I just got the A119 as well - and I love it so far. I'm hardwiring it into the cigarette lighter fuse, and it even came with multiple 3M sticky mounts, so I can transfer it between vehicles (provided I run another hardwire power line in the second vehicle, too).

I ordered mine off of Amazon, from a seller called SpyTec. They're an authorized US distributor. I was reading on DashCamTalk and they recommended ordering from a user in particular...OC something? I don't remember the name right now.

I use the Viofo all the time and a few weeks ago we took it camping. I went to review and copy the files from the drive up and noticed that half of them were corrupt. Weird.

A dash cam won't record anything without a data card being installed. Data cards are usually micro sd cards and are easy to remove in a couple of seconds. A bigger worry for a wrongdoer would be showing up on someone else's dash cam video.

Yeah and I almost always have my Gopro with me so if I removed the card from the dash cam and they asked why it wasn't there, I could say that I needed it in the GoPro instead. They can't argue that.

Of course, it is extremely unlikely that I'd ever be in the wrong in an accident so that situation will never arise...

Is your sd card recommended for dash cams? SanDisk cards are mentioned a lot on the dash cam forums as being unreliable while Transcend is supposed to be one of the best. In any event the card needs to be a Class 10 to be fast enough keep up with the recording frame rate.

A certain dealership didn't use lugnuts to hold the wheels on. This happened about 2 mins after leaving the dealership. T'was a butthole tightening experience to say the least.

Just pulled the trigger on a Viofo A119, makes a lot of sense to have a cam. I am just going to run it down the drivers side into the fuse box with an add-a-fuse.

Actually to yell you the truth if the accident was my fault I'd fess up regardless. Otherwise the other person will pay higher insurance rates, that's not fair.

What do ppl think about using an action-cam (GoPro, Viofo/Git2/GitUp etc.) as a dashcam?
I'm thinking about doing it because
(a) I can get much higher frame-rates in an a-cam (240fps) than in a dash-cam (60fps),
which should make it easier to legibly capture moving license-plates;
(b) I want a bigger screen, and there are more a-cams than d-cams which allow external monitors;
(c) I can use an action-cam for other things;
(d) Space-hogging, installation effort etc. are lesser concerns for me.

Your ideas / experiences?
