Your Experience with NON OEM Tie Rods

Hello everyone,

I'm looking for some new inner and outer tie rod ends. I would prefer to get a greasable outer, but I am not sure who, or if anyone, makes a decent one.

Moog seems to be the most well known name I have found with a greasable outer, but I haven't been too fond of their products in the past.

If I can't find a decent aftermarket one, I suppose I'll just go with Toyota ends but those are expensive.

Thank you guys for your help.

For reference, my truck is a 2000 3.4 4x4.

I just rebuilt the entire front end haha. I'd go with oem inners for sure, I've run the 555 outers in the past and they seemed to last awhile. I have oem outers now though. I'd just hate to have to get back in there sooner than I have to, so I figured going oem would be the best bet. Oem lasted me 125,000 miles so I figured why not.

Didn't you just swap a new rack in?

Thanks for the feedback :)

I swapped my rack at least 3 years ago I think. It came with new inners, but not outers. I am looking to replace them all before I drive to Cali next month.

I did find a decent deal on inners, outers, rack boots, and sway links from Detroit Axle. But I have never used their stuff before.

I am currently running Sankei 555 inners and outers. No issues so far, but they only have around 25K on them.

Had some play in my inners so I swapped the inner/outer at the same time.

There is also the Tacoma outer swap (larger ball), but you need to do the lower bj's at the same time.

I got my ITRs from NAPA five years ago, no problems to report as of yet. Felt that $250+ for new ones from the dealer was too much.

I had a friend local with a shop at the time so I was able to get them through his distributor. If you find a place that has Moog's local check in the boxes as they may be 555's.

Cali sounds fun! Let me know what you end up going with as far as tie rods. Nice to have options, and hope you're doing well! When are you coming up to Colorado?

don't get too hung up on greaseable.

Moog is generally going to have a metal on metal type part...that's why they need to be greased constantly.(555 is similar in design). The OEM part, and most non-greaseable aftermarket use a poly low-friction bearing for the joint, which doesn't really wear, so if the boot stays intact, they'll never need any additional grease.

I bought Moog inners and outers. The Moog inners are actually just a rebranded Sankei 555. Appears very good quality with the poly joint + polished stud similar to the OEM design.

The Moog outers are the Problem Solver line up. A very good quality joint IF you keep it regularly lubricated. If you don't plan on regularly maintaining the joint, then definitely go OEM. One thing I like about Moog joints is the oversized castle and adjuster nut. In some climates the OEM nuts will almost always seize over time and become impossible to take off, so having a larger nut is always nice.

People have been commenting that inner tie rod sudden failures are common with non-OEM joints, but in the other thread the guy had a similar failure with the OEM joint. That's why I'm not entirely convinced that OEM is necessarily the best in this application. The lifetime warranty of the Moog is also nice.

My autozone gold tie rod end has been holding up fine but it only has about 5k miles on it. I've only done some minor off roading in the 5k miles it's been on there.

It has a lifetime warranty so that is a plus

Nope, he said "The inner tie rod however is a different story. I dont know who makes it, but its definately not a Toyota oem part."

Post #24 on the 2nd page OP says it was an OEM part. Weird though, in his pictures the grease appears grey but I recall the OEM joints having red grease.
