Check out www.bajarack.com. Their racks look pretty nice and come in around the price of a Thule rack. You can even get the off-road light brackets and a harness for it.

ive noticed in these pics....no sunroofs. can you not use the tilt option if you have one of these racks?

That's a good question. When the sunroof is fully tilted up, how far does it stick up from the roof. I've got a thule rack on my 4runner roof rack and there's probably 3-inches of clearance under it. The bajarack would be similar.

For the money, and depending on how much you would actually use it, I would probably pass on something like that. I see a ton of the "play pen" roof racks around town but I never see them with anything on/in them. Yes, they look cool, but I personally prefer racks that serve a specific purpose (i.e. ski/snowboard, bike, etc.)

I don't get much noise at all with my Thule rack. As far as MPGs go, the Thule rack is so light, there was no change (until I load it up).
What's used to make the Gobi rack?
I love having the rack. It comes in handy when I drive out on the beach for a day with the fam. I use the crap out of it.

I don't think weight is the issue with MPG, but aerodynamics when items are placed in it.
I've heard reports of the cargo boxes (spirit, atlantis, skybox etc) being quieter and better for mpg.
The gobi looks like its pretty heavy duty, and the fairing only covers up to the lower bar. I don't know much about it, but I've seen someone here in Austin with one (on a 4Runner) driving on 2222 from time to time.
Myself, I've been debating a cargo box vs a roof rack (Thule moab vs yakima mega/load warrior). Haven't decided what yet. The gobi is cool, but seems a bit overkill for my needs.
