I hate to do this, and maybe these type of threads even get locked. But..

I would just like everyone here's opinion on this '03.

Obviously it is a SR5 base model, no sunroof.

142,000km's or 85,000 miles.

No accidents
V6 4x4.

Vernon (where the vehicle is located) is a 5 hour drive from my house, but my Sister lives there. Her husband is going to be testdriving the truck this week, and if he likes it I will call and play the numbers game as I will be trading in my 2006 Si.

If the numbers come back reasonable (trade in for my Si around 10,000) then I will drive up Saturday and attempt to pick up the truck.

That list price is a typical dealer price...marked up about $3K-$4K over what they paid for it. Start at $12,000...it would probbly be a decent deal at $13,000 and past $13,500, I'd walk away. If nothing else, just to see if they call you back. I'm not being all hardcore about it but I have worked at a dealership when I was a Spring Chicken, and I proimise you they almost always mark it up around $4K in this price rance.

I would say 14,888 is actually a LOW price for the area.

As we all know, 4runner prices differ greatly by location. Most early 4th's are $16-18 out here, over 20 for limiteds.

Just a point, before I saw this I was looking at a 1999 Limited elocker with 140,000miles (225,000km's) listed for $11,900. Which isnt to far off of the market.

It is to bad monday is Thanksgiving up here, so the dealership will be closed.

I hope on the phone I can make some good progress in the numbers game, then I can take next saturday off and pic up the truck.

It seems really difficult to comment on price, as most of us are in the US of A and even here the prices vary pretty significantly (for reference, I got mine for $11,5, with the same basic mileage, a SE package and a V8, but from a private guy). That being said I always felt that it made sense to try to get into a 4th gen if at all possible, given the same basic budget. I don't know if the Canadians got any other fun options (pretty sure yours only come in 4wd, etc). I know you're looking for opinions, but I would imagine that you're in the wrong place if you expect anyone here to talk you out of it. Follow everyone's advice and go low and be ready to walk if they don't meet your price.

No dealer displays a low price. It is always marked up 3K-4K. Dealers fully expect to drop $1K...it takes strategy to get more. If you bargain from a position of strength, you will manage. It seems you are already justifying the price though. I negotiate for a living as well and there is not a dealer or company I have met, that isn't willing to negotiate if they know the buyer is serious. Just stay in a position of strength and emotional detachment. Walk away once- just to see how sucked in they get when they see a serious buyer walking away.

Not only will they make $2-$4K off this sale, they will also make $2-$4K off the trade-in. You have the position of strength...just have to realize that.
