Zmilins Limited audio upgrade thread

Apparently I have decided to start building an audio system. That said this wil serve as a placeholder for all things involved in my audio upgrades. Its been years since I put effort into building a real audio system.

So far I have added:
Kenwood DMX905S - this was removed from my Grand Cherokee and installed in the T4R within a week.

I have already acquired a pair of Focal K2 165KRX2 and last night I pulled the trigger on a Focal FDP 6.900 amp. Of course nothing is installed yet.
Im debating trying to find a way to fit in a 3 way component set by Focal but that may be tough. Well see what happens.

No pics yet but they are coming.

Stuff keeps coming in as I order it and put this system together in my head. I'm getting excited to get the install started but I know that I MUST be patient and be sure not to forget anything or rush and regret a decision. I have been second guessing my amp choice but went back to my notes and am once again back on track with the plan.

Some of those promised pics:
Kenwood DMX905S - one of the cool features of the deck installed with the iDataMaestro is that you get access to some vehicle stats.

The gauges are assignable. There are a plethora of options here. I have one set up with 1/4 mile ET, 0-60 time etc...

Focal 165KRX2 - I had a set of 165w3 back in "the day" and absolutely loved those speakers. I still have them but one of the 6.5 is damaged and the 4" wont fit in the dash location. Ill install these up front and eventually add a new Focal 3 way set down the road. The new set uses a 3" in place of the 4" For now here they are...

I ordered a sub a couple days ago. I opted for the JL Audio CS112GTW3 (Single 12TW3 ProWedge Enclosed Subwoofer). Two reasons for this...
1 - I really wanted a 12". I also wanted a 12" that I could fit into the OEM JBL sub position at some point down the line. The TW3 is a shallow mount 12" sub in teh JL lineup.
2 - That sub enclosure has the sub I would eventually buy but I get it in a package I can use now vs waiting for the time to build the enclosure the way I want.

Eventually I want to get the 12" in the area the OEM JBL takes up. Thats going to take me some time. Right now I think its going to be made using the stacked ring method with a fiberglass backing. I also want to replace the JBL cover panel and again, that will take some time and thinking.

Looking good so far. If you have any questions feel free to give me a yell. I have quite a bit of experience playing around with stereos in 4Runners.

nice focal, i was going to go focal again, but then my amps have so much power at 2 ohm loads, almost 400 a channel on a 2 channel amp.
when i ran passive k2p, i had close to 240 watts per side, its loud.
i decided to go hertz, so far it sounds good with the mille setup. also im running it active, sounds a little louder and clearer than the focal k2p i had.
i have 2 sets so all my amps are running at 2 ohm load for now.

Nice. I'm running 400 watts to each of my midbass and 150 watts to each tweeter and 150 watts to each midrange. Headroom is a good thing.

yea, headroom is good.
i use a dd1 for my gains, its alot of power going thru, i do play my stereo loud tho.
hows your new setup sounding? lot of nice gear.

It's sounding pretty good. Still needs some more tuning, I plan on making three more trips to Audio X in Alabama this year to get it dialed in. I'm hoping for another world championship this year. Not sure if it will happen but that's my goal.
 
I really thought I was going to stop and take pics through the process but I got on a roll and didnt look back. I also had to beat the rain which didnt happen so it a couple days.

I ended up ordering the speaker adapters from Tacotunes for the 6x9s, tweeters and the amp rack. I like their stuff and even though I modified the amp rack it saved me a considerable amount of time. If I had more space and time I might have considered making my own.

I adjusted the amp rack a bit more and needed to flatten it to make enough room under the seat rails for the amp. Its wider than the space between the seat rails hence the need to flattening. I bent the tabs at the front and drilled for a screw to secure it.

I need to go back and Dynamat the doors, work on closing up the inner door openings and install the FAST rings. At least I can get these speakers broken in :)

come on now, get the passive crossover out and go active.:music:

you can still run the mids on each channel and the tweets on the other channels. only a few wires to switch around.
start the tweeters at 3.2khz and up -18 db per octave
just dont go lower than the tweeter fs which is 2149Hz

i dont think his radio has a dsp, got to use the amp crossovers. i think it was picture C4 in the manual. start the crossover on the tweeter high so you dont blow it.
 
The 905S does have the ability to do some time delay (its in the "listening position" section). I dont know how good it is.

I like having control of my crossover from the deck and I think I would need to give that up if I go active. Ive been thinking about it though.

i think on your radio, you have a high pass filter and low pass.i might be wrong, im a pioneer guy:flipoff:
on amp, use all 6.
sub will go to 5 and 6, i think you need to split the front left to 1 and 3 and right to 2 and 4.
make sure to use the amp filters hp and the bp filters too.

your low pass on the woofer all the way down since you want to control it thru the radio, pretty sure you know distortion so you can play with the hp crossover on the radio.
follow the c4 chart kinda.
