I'm going to respectfully disagree with you on this statement (please don't ban me...). They are rare and a bit cool, but why would anyone want a two door 4runner that isn't a 1st gen? It's a pain to get into the back and you don't have the luxury of the removable top. Just seems stupid to me, but everyone has their own tastes and preferences.

Because they ARE rare. I had one back in the mid 90's and got rid of it... stupid youngster move... wish I never had. Like you said, depends on your taste and what you will use it for.

If I found one in decent shape (not the one listed - it looks worn slick) I'd buy it and keep it bone stock.
 
Looks like a fixer upper. Which engine/tranny is in it? Might be worth looking into if the body is straight and the frame is rot free. But unless you're fairly mechanically inclined, you'll end up spending more on this rig than one that's ready to go. Lots of the cosmetic stuff could be sourced from eBay, so that could take some of the expense out.

Soo... how in love are you with this one?

My friend just got done solid axle swapping an immaculate 2 door 2nd gen for a customer who is or was on this forum. It's one of coolest 4runners I can think of. They've got some style! And that's the whole point of a 2 door vs 4 - valuing style over convenience.
 
a 3.4 swap is in my future. It will be a 2nd gen 2 door. Would fit nicely with the 1st gen turbo (rare) and 3rd gen 5spd 4x4 (rare, even if it's not original)

We should make this a 2nd gen 2 door appreciation thread
