Thanks to [MENTION=103267]Saker[/MENTION] for coming up with this mod and sharing his work. I wanted to share my variation on the attachment method. I don't think it's any better or worse than saker's but gives an alternative especially if you don't have a rivnut gun.
When I removed the OEM t4r handles and test fit a rivnut in the square opening it hit me an 80/20 t-slot nut may fit. Tried a 45 series 8mm nut and it fit well. 8mm thread is too large to fit the bolt hole in the handle so I ordered 6mm 45 series t-slot nuts. 1/4 - 20 works too but the fj cruiser handles came w 6mm bolts. I like keeping it metric where possible.
The pics are mostly self explanatory how this goes together and how the t-slot nuts turn to lock in the square opening. It's a little finnicky getting both nuts into the square openings with the handle and bolts attached. Have patience and make sure you have a couple turns on the nuts so they don't back off and fall into the roof cavity. Keep tension on the bolt/nut by pulling down on the handle while you screw it in. Finish torquing with a 10mm deep well. I didn't get crazy... maybe 20 ft lbs. I used blue thread lock as well.
Some advantages to this method... 1. It's easily reversible if you want to go back to oem t4r handles- rivnut method would require you to remove rivnuts 2. You can adjust side to side placement of the handle during install.
Result? Seemingly strong but they need some miles and usage before proven out.

I like the variation to my method. Looks like a viable solution for people that would like to do this mod and would like to have the option you described or don’t have access to a rivnut gun / tool.
Could you post where you obtained the t-slot nuts and part numbers if possible?

Thanks Saker. How involved is taking the folding handles out? ..anything to watch out for ? Ordering this and the driver side grab handle, which I know you've done also … when was the last 4Runner model to have the driver side handle? Wondering if any year 5th gen had them so I could order the left (driver) side window pillar trim with the holes already preformed to accept the handle.

Yep. I loved the mod but since I set my driver seat at the highest position I kept bumping my head when looking out the window. So I made a paracord grab handle to soften the blow. I posted about it here:

The passenger side one is not a problem. I’m planning on modding the two rear handles with the Saker mod next.

Easy method is if you do the way [MENTION=215569]WAT4R[/MENTION] did in the above post. I went the harder route!
Don't think any trim on previous models will fit that had drivers side handles....different generation vehicle.
You will have to go the route we went if you want to do the "A" Pillar Grab Handle mod.

Looking to do this method but for 2nd row grab handles. I like the fact that I can revert to stock if I change my mind down the road. Also looking to add the FJ Cruiser side visors as well for the kiddoes.

FJ CRUISER GRIP HANDLES INSTALL Revision 1.0
The purpose of this write-up is to help people that are interested in installing FJ CRUISER GRIP HANDLES on their 2014+ Toyota 4Runner. I will list the parts used as well as pictures.
Remove OEM Handles, Install the steel 1/4-20 Steel Knurled Flanged Rivet Nut as shown with a rivet nut install tool. Mine came from Grainger. Grainger 1/4-20 Steel Rivet Nut Link If you don't have a Grainger, see the spec sheet for diameter of rivet nut as these fit the rectangular hole better than the smaller diameter ones.
LIST:
Part numbers of OEM Toyota & parts needed.

1/4-20 Steel Rivet Nut (Rivnut)
Rivet Nuts installed (Mine are installed forward in the rectangular holes)
1/4-20 X 1 1/4" Stainless Cap Screws shown installed in the Rivet Nuts (for demonstration purposes only)
Handles bolted in with cap screw shown.
FJ Cruiser Grip Handles installed complete
Tool used: Westward Rivet NutGun
These are more secure like they should be. I was not satisfied with the nylon nuts for the fixture.

Good Afternoon Sir,
Been away on business. I have a question that maybe you can answer. I had 2 FJ's & loved the D/S Sun Visor where our flip grab handles I see you recently replaced. Nice job too!! I want to know IF the mounting holes for the FJ Sun Visor are the same distant/measurement of our flip handles. If So I want to swap then out. I joined a FJ Forum but had no luck on posting my question.

I raised an eyebrow at the idea of rivnuts set in square holes. But I’m also not enthusiastic about losing a t-nut in the body channel and having it rattling around for the next 10 years.
Would you say the rivnuts have remained tight and sturdy over time?

On my 2014 I used rivnuts as described.
It was more of a task than using TNuts.
The rivnuts stayed secure until I totaled my 2024 T4R.
So on my 2022, I decided to use the TNut method.
IIRC, one can place the bolt thru the handle and the TNut on the bolt, turn the TNut so it can be inserted thru the opening, turn TNut to the desired position and tighten bolt.
