When I took the OEM alternator off and replaced it with a HO alternator, it was in perfectly fine condition. I did this literally in order to make a video of the process and secondarily to have a "rebuilt" trail spare that I know I could rely on. Something I did off camera is clean up the case and insides as well.

I've been a big fan of PartsOuq as of late. From them, all in all, it was about $70 shipped for all the parts to do this.

I appreciate the complements on the video (Weekend Wrench Turner is my Youtube altered ego) and I've been trying to put out one a week for the last 4-5 months or so. Not all of them are working on the 4Runner, but are generally centered around working in the garage while my toddler is napping on the weekends. Been working on restoring an old floor model drill press lately, though a rear axle seal job has put off completion of that lately.

Sincerely though, you and Sean were the inspiration to start doing these videos. In fact, some of the videos I've done are just my take of things I've watched and learned from you both as far as working on the 4Runner. I in no way claim to do a better job than you both do, but do hope to at least contribute some shared knowledge to those who watch.

Gotcha Scott. Well, it's cool you made the video because no doubt people will benefit from it. $70 is up there and I wonder what a Denso Rebuilt would cost. But, who knows really what you're getting when you buy a rebuilt one. Are they replacing the bearings or are they just replacing the parts necessary to get it running again.

Wiring problems

Hi, my name is Bruno and i'm new here, i just got a 3rd gen 4runner with 300.000 miles and it's not running for 2 reasons.
It's over heating and someone took the thermostat out and the biggest reason is because it almost caught on fire. it has some wiring problems. i would like to know if someone could help me get a wire diagram for this car and i'll take some photos to get you posted and to let you know if its going well or not.

You might be able to find an online version of the wiring diagram but a better bet might be to just try to find one for sale on Ebay for your year. Lots of people sell the factory service manuals and wiring diagrams.

Watched the video....Ive never had my A pillar off. If off is the back of the rivets visible and can a person put silicone goop there too to help make sure it all seals

You are drilling into a void and can't access the back side. I confirmed this morning what Anwar told me and you cannot assess the area where the rivets are being affixed to by pulling off the A-pillar trim piece.

Great videos man! Binge watched the videos in your channel LOL. Was planning to do this mod but worried about rust and stuff :D .. Looks really nice tho

How are you going to look cool cruising the mall without this mod. Don't worry about the rust. Just use some touch up paint or clear coat like we use in the video and you're golden.

Really would have been nice if he was using a rig with bad ball joints so you could see movement that would require replacement.
 
While Timmy's videos can be a bit longwinded they are very informative, better that most that are out there. Good job.

Yeah, in a perfect world we would have been able to show the movement in some bad ball joints but as the Rolling Stones sang, you can't always get what you want.

Watched the upper and lower ball joints ones again yesterday as I was doing my daughters rig. I ran out of time and only did the passenger side upper along with both lowers. Are the uppers ones that wear out as easily as the lowers? Sure was a hassle with marginal tools from O'Riellys.

The uppers last longer and are not prone to failure like the LBJs are.
