Welcome to the forum!

You can't start a new thread until you've posted about 15 replies. It's an old forum setting that was meant to prevent spam bots.

That being said, you can reply to the following thread with any questions you might have: The 3rd Gen All Questions Allowed Thread

Although, you'll probably get better responses if it's clear you searched the forum or Google first. This topic has been (and similar topics have been) discussed many times over the years, including something similar recently: Any advice on a louder muffler?

And Straight piped the Runner!!

Look at this thread for good tips on searching this forum: Alternate Search for T4R - 3rd Gen Section

Again, welcome! And best of luck

CV Axle R&R

A few questions for the author, and anyone else

The center cap covering the axle nut, what a PITA to remove. Took me ruining a good chisel (now dedicated to this job) working around in circles. Are there any options for replacing this cap with somethings that seals just as well but is easier to remove?

Also, at what point do we want to replace the outer diff/axle seal?

You just need to use the right progression of tools to get it off easy. Go to play time 10:54 in the GX 470 CV Axle Replacement video below and you'll see how I do it.

There' isn't anything that will replace that dust cap. Just learn how to take it off properly without damaging it and it won't be an issue for you anymore.

That first tool I used to start to separate the dust cap from the hub face is actually a rotary hammer bit. If you didn't have something like that, I would use the thinnest flat blade screwdriver you have to knock it between the cap and hub to get a gap started. Or, you could just alter a small chisel with a bench grinder and grind it down to a thinner beveled knife edge.

Here's a link to a rotary hammer bit set. ZELCAN 6-Piece Chisel Set for SDS Plus Bits Tile Grooving Scraping Flat Point Scaling Chisels Hammer Drill Tool for Tile Masonry Concrete Brick Stone Work 40Cr Steel Drill Bit Set w SDS Plus Shanks - - Amazon.com

You replace the differential seals when they start leaking. A good time to change them is when you already got the CV axles out of the way. I've pulled CV axles and the seals weren't leaking and didn't bother changing them and it worked out. One time it didn't work out and one of the seals started leaking right after the a CV axle swap. So, it's a roll of the dice. The safer but more expensive decision is to replace the seals while you have the CVs out. I did a video many years ago on replacing these seals but now have a much better tool for the seal insertion make by the Wit's End company. The second video linked is that video showcasing the new tool.

I did it the same. Started with a chisel, progressed to flat blade screwdriver then mini pry bar.

Since one of my factory axles separated I was thinking about cutting the inner shaft off the cup and making a plug to protect the seal and keep the fluid from dripping out on the driver side when pulling CVs. On the passenger side you can just shove a rag in to contain the fluid.

I've seen guys do this so if they break too many axles on a trail they don't loose all their fluid and can limp home

Hey everyone! Sorry for posting here I don’t post often but thought I’d ask you guys a question before I have my transmission pulled out for the second time.

Long story short I bought a 2000 4runner sr5 manual transmission from a gentlemen off here and drove it back to My home in Texas and have been working to on it for awhile. Finally got to the point where my first gear was slipping out and decided to have the transmission rebuilt by Marlen Crawler. I’ve heard great things so I had my transmission sent to them. Just got it installed last week and I have a terrible whiny noise. It happens when in gear and when out gear at around 45 mph is when I notice it the most. They put in a new input shaft and I had them put the Beefier forks as well also a brand new clutch and everything.

Called Marlen and sent them a video and they said that sounds not normal but had no idea what it was. Obviously I understand that since it’s not apart and can’t really tell, but I just thought I’d ask see if you guys have any ideas how a brand-new rebuilt transmission would be making this noise. They told me that they would warrantee it and to send it back to them.

Obviously I’m a bit frustrated that I’m gonna have to pay for all the labor to have it removed and put back in but if they can fix the problem then I’ll be fine I guess. Anyway here’s the video that I sent them.

Cheers!

All I hear is exhaust noise. Does it still make the noise if you push the clutch in? What if you take it out of gear while going that speed?

I have a little bit of a squeal noise that happens about 25% of the time when releasing the clutch in first gear.

No, it's not the pedal shaft, bushing or spring LOL

Likely the throw out bearing or the part of the input shaft the throw out bearing rides on has some gunk causing extra resistance. Could also be the slave cylinder, but they normally feel different when they squeak.

I'm about to buy a used Toyota 4runner 2000 3.4L 4x4

The truck won't start because it needs a new ecu...thats what the owner says. Something that has to do with the vehicle VIN #

Can it just be restarted?

There isn’t a restart for the ecm.

Unless it's an absolute steal I'd find another truck
