ABS disable V2.0 for older 3rd gens (On/off on the fly)

A while back, i made a ABS disable switch that would shut down the ABS system whenever i wanted. The only issue was that in order to reenable the ABS system, the truck had to be restarted.

Singtoe came up with the good idea of using the Diff Lock ECU to disable ABS on the fly as that is how it works from the factory. So i put my truck back to stock and tried it. However, that method requires that you have the Diff Lock ECU and mine does not.

I decided to find a way that would work. Here is what i came up with.

This was performed on a 1997 SR5 5 speed.

Supplies:

1 normal on/off switch of your choice.

1 normally closed pushbutton switch.

Wire

Butt connectors

Female blade connectors

Electrical Tape

Wire stripper/cutter/crimper

Steps:

1. Locate the wire harness on the ABS actuator which is behind the airbox.


2. Cut the gray/red wire and crimp a wire to either end of it


3. Run the wires inside through the firewall and connect them to your On/Off switch.

4. Locate your ABS ecu behind the passenger side kick panel.

Unplug the bigger of the two harnesss and then locate the yellow wire and cut it


Crimp a wire to each end and then run them to the pushbutton switch

Put it all back together.

I ended up combining the 2 methods as the original method required a restart of the truck for the ABS system to come back. When ABS was disabled with the second method, it would also take out the speedometer.

I combined the 2 methods and now i am able to disable the ABS while keeping the speedometer active and ABS can be reenabled without having to restart the truck.

I'm going to have to try this

This may sound silly but I'm going to inquire.... Can the ABS be disabled "on the fly"??? While brakes engaged? It seems from your video that it disables it instantly if the lights are indicative of the actual ABS system shutting down. Say you want to turn it off while it's kicking in and you are about to slide through a snow covered intersection? Conceivably, you would disable ABS as soon as you climbed in the driver's seat if it's snowy on the roads, but perhaps it's another circumstance where your instincts tell you, you would stop alot better without ABS and you still have it engaged, and you are already in that grinding noise phase!? Personally my main issue has really only been snow where I find ABS useless with this truck but I'm just curious.

If it can and you could, wouldn't it be cool to have a switch near where your hands are, ON THE STEERING WHEEL? I'm looking at the wheel and a thought came to my head, what if you took over the cruise control on/off button/switch and relabeled it ABS? (The push button on the end of the stick on mine... Can still disengage cruise I would think the normal way of pulling back on the stick. The push button just illuminates the "Cruise" light on the dash and allows the system to function)... Might not have the fancy red light switch but the yellow ABS lights are enough to know if it's on or off... and put a push button switch somewhere else for cruise since turning the cruise control on/off isn't a last second idea??? You would still need a reset ABS button/switch as well somewhere.... I don't have the time or knowledge currently to figure the wiring but would think it couldn't be THAT hard for someone with the knowledge??? That is if ABS can be turned off almost instantaneously while brakes are engaged? 1 second might be useful but past that it's probably a useless idea then? :shrug: maybe I'm waaaay over thinking this....

Part of the reason for looking for another place to put a button is my 2000 has a different center console than the one in the video which must be pre-2000

My abs light is always on. I have thought about checking it out and fixing it but it doesn't really bother me. Also with a 5 speed life is easier.

I have been looking in to this and after studying the wiring diagrams, you don't need to pull wires through the firewall. The gray-red wire that is usually cut at the plug under the hood can be cut near the same spot the yellow wire is cut, at the ABS computer. The yellow wire is in the larger of the two plugs, A17(pin #10). The gray with red stripe connects on the smaller plug(A16) to the ABS computer at pin #16.

Hopefully this will help with not having to punch wires through the firewall.

oh ok...so how do you disable ABS operating diff lock light on dash and running air lockers??
