It must sure be a nice feeling to have a low mileage 4Runner like that—to be secure in the knowledge that it will most likely go another 200k.
I wouldn't quite know that feeling though, since I'm about to hit 375,000 miles in the next day or two. While I rest easy knowing the truck is a Toyota, I'm a realist and know that I'm in semi-uncharted territory; that my engine or tranny could go nuclear at any moment for any number of reasons.
If you think about it though, we don't really know how long these trucks will go with regular maintenance. The average American driver logs about 13-14 thousand miles a year. So that would put the oldest 3rd gen Runners at an average of about 250k miles on the odometer. This jives with what I typically see in sales ads like craigslist for the 3rd gens.
Another telling thing I've noticed (on the West Coast at least) is that not only are 3rd gen Runners rare in the junkyards (especially in relation to how many are on the roads every day) but the majority of the junkyard Runners are only there because of a accidents! They didn't die—they were killed. That's a meaningful difference.
So we really don't know where the bridge finally gives out on these trucks. Of course there are statistical outliers at 400, 500 and maybe some 600k trucks, but at this early stage of the 4runners life—they are far too few in number to give any meaningful insight.
They do give us all hope though...hope that if some a-hole doesn't run into us—we will all still be rolling around in our "classic" T4Rs twenty years from now.

Yeah, I see the same thing. My local yard has just now started listing a few 4Runners but they are all wrecked, most to the point that's it is not worth even looking at them! Up here in Sacramento there's even more than down in the valley (though I still see them a lot when I go down to visit family) but they are all on the road, not rotting away in yards.
