What should I look for diagnostic tests (battery & dash good, but no start sounds)

I press in the clutch, twist the key, the dash lights up properly, but nothing clicks.

Can you give me diagnostic ideas of what and how to test?

The battery test good at 13 volts with a meter but I jumped it from another car and put it on the charger anyway, but neither made any difference.

I can see the clutch switch moving - but I don't know exactly how to diagnostically test it.

Any suggestions for how to diagnose why the starter solenoid won't even click?

ok just a shot but sounds like that clutch safety switch, it this how my honda would act when it went out, it just a idea i have no idea how to test it.:fear:

Well, there is a switch to bypass the clutch switch right on the dash. Hit the button, orange light comes on, and twist the key. If it starts then, the clutch switch is the problem.

The first thing to do after that is take that DMM and test for voltage at the large and small lugs on the starter. Small one is only with key in start position, the other is full-time. If both have good voltage, problem is in starter, probably the contacts.

If not, head to the starter relay. Listen to my man [MENTION=102597]IBallEngineer[/MENTION] in another thread:

Having to tap the starter indicates worn brushes. But that didn't actually solve anything for you. So do you have a multi-meter? Let's check voltage at the battery and the Starter relay. The starter relay should have battery voltage at terminal 5 all the time, and when you try to crank, it should have voltage at terminal 1.

This assumes the 7.5 amp start fuse is good, and the 40Amp power fuse is good too.

If my 2wd 4runner has this switch, that will be a great diagnostic test.
But I can't find this switch on my dash.
Do you see where it is in these pictures of my dash?

OOPS, sorry. You don't have it. I thought all 5-speeds had it. Always something new to learn.

Well, if you do the test at the starter relay, voltage at Terminal 1 with key in START position will eliminate the clutch switch as a possible cause.

It's easy to get a test lead on the bottom side of the starter solenoid, but it was impossible to get a test lead on the top.

I couldn't even get my fingers on the rubber protection cap. I don't know how anyone can get in there without something special. I'm still trying, but, I figured I'd report back that I'm stuck trying to get a test lead on the upper solenoid connection (I have the ignition in the "on" position).

Did you try to go in through the wheel well? I don't know your engine but that's how you do a 3.4 V6.
