I’m looking for a 4th Gen with a V8 so I can tow my popup camper easier and I’d like to sell my 02 Sport. It’s got 172k on the clock. I was new to T4R’s and knew nothing about rusted frames, and it was night and I was stupid. Anyway, passenger side frame was rusted and had a few 1” holes, as well as those triangle rear supports that were pretty shot.
My neighbor has a business restoring old muscle cars and does high dollar stuff. Frame off stuff that takes months to finish and sells for 50k. Chargers, Superbirds, etc. I took it to him and he was kind enough to bang out all the rusted pieces and weld in new frame pieces. Car looks great and he gave it his stamp of approval. There is still some light surface rust on the drivers side frame but nothing apparent when he banged the frame with a hammer. And since the car’s been in NM since I got it a few years ago (really dry and almost zero snow) the rust hasn’t progressed.
I’ve got new OME springs and new shocks all around, Tundra brake upgrade, lots of other stuff and the car is in pretty great shape.
So...how do I price a “formerly rusted” 4runner? And as much as I appreciate mechanical input it would be really cool if people didn’t just state the obvious like, shouldn’t have bought it in the first place, or, rusted cars are worthless etc. Thanks.
