Can I fit a 33" tire in the spare location without worrying about weight capacity of the chain? what mods have you guys done to keep the chain from breaking.

A friends 265 70 17 mounted at the stock location used to rub badly on the track bar.
My 265 70 16 Hankooks spare rubs on the track bar. Deflating it just clears it. I carry air in case I have to use the spare.
I don't think your 33 will even fit in the stock spare tire location.

I have my 33 under and didn't even think of chain capacity! It fits fine.

Curious what the tire make/model is and what the embossed dimension numbers are. A friend said he had to ditch the hitch, deflate to 10psi and carefully guide the spare while cranking it down to make a 33" General M/T of some kind "fit"......that's not really a fit in my book and I bet it rubbed eventually.

i looked at trying to fit a bigger tire in there and didn’t think it was worth it, not a fan of big heavy bumpers on an already underpowered rig so the stock spare works for me.

A 33" will not fit without rubbing the panhard bar without some sort of mod. I believe there were some threads years ago where the Sonoran Steel owner used the spare tire parts from an earlier gen 4runner to make it fit. I'm not sure about the weight capacity of the spare tire cable but I completely understand your concern. It was obviously designed to hold the factory spare but probably not a much heavier tire while bouncing down trails.
