My catalytic converter got chopped and stolen

DAMN IT! i never thought it would be in broad daylight at my workplace's parking lot. it drives extremely rough and EXTREMELY loud. What can i do now? should i go through insurance or just pay for it myself (a new cat that is)? i'm in the process of filing a police report, so in the meanwhile, if i do get pulled over by a cop because of noise level, I'll have a reason/excuse.

Also, i read a post awhile back saying it is inadvisable to drive without a cat because the hot exhaust gas can melt/burn wires underneath the car. can anyone confirm this, and also inform me what other damages can be caused by driving without a cat?

that sucks id really try and avoid not driving it tell you get it fixed with no cat theres no back pressure and could cause some problems

Bummer dude. That's the first I've ever heard of that happening. I'd probably just replace it yourself depending on your deductible. It might work out to be the same and then your monthly gets jacked up.

I was actually just looking at cats on ebay last night because mine is pretty well shot I believe. I don't know if you want a stock one or not but you can get a magnaflow from ebay for just under $100 with free shipping. Assuming your deductible is over that, I would just go that route but if you have a $0 comprehensive deductible then definitely hit up the insurance company on that.

they steal them for the platinum inside...gay!

yeah i wouldn't drive with out it just becuase it sucks! sorry to hear man i hope they get run over by a 4runner one day-karama is a *****!

yeah, i was looking up listings on ebay also. but i live in california, and they have very strict rules. but i did find one, its $200 instead of $100. but the problem is that it list that it works with the 2.7L 4runner, while mines is a 3.4L. I guessing the 2.7L is a 4-cylinder, i dont know if i will pass emission/smog check with this? anyone knows anything about this?

also, apparently my insurance doesnt cover this. so anything i do, its coming out of my own pocket.... sigh. coincidentally, i spent nearly $1k to repair a blown rear seal and various work on the brake system last month.

its actually the palladium they steal them for. ive been in the metals business (3rd generation now) for about 15 yrs, and in the last few yrs there has been a rash of thefts like this, and on sprinkler backflow valves which are made of red brass. you'd be amazed what you see in this industry. sorry to hear about your converter.

Go through your insurance if you can and get a cash check from them. the factory cats go for around 12-14 hundred that's a nice check but I know if you got a check from your insurance it would be in the 23 hundred + range. Insurance company's calculate for factory parts and labor. get a few quotes get the check buy aftermarket and send me the difference :cheers:

i bought a t4r 3 weeks ago. the guy i bought it from told me it happened to him.
the problem was that the repair shop that he went to used silicone when installing it so its trowing my oxygen sensor off.
