08 T4R lack of cup holders serious problem

Hey guys,

I searched and didn't see anything, but how is everyone dealing with the lack of cup holders in the 4th gen? I have my iPad mounted exactly where the two front cup holders are like so:

Which leaves me with only the driver's door pocket as the only usable cup holder. But the door pocket is awkward due to being deeper than necessary and the angle isn't right for anything other than bottles with lids.

I don't really miss my Taco except it had like a gazillion cup holders which were so useful in hindsight. Other than moving the ipad elsewhere (I like where it is now), are there any solutions?

I may be the first guy on an internet forum to ask this, but any of you tried any of the following aftermarket cupholders available?

I have a few suggestions.

the first one could be installed where your din pocket is under your after market head unit.

likewise, second gens have a pull out cup holder try that will fit two drinks. not sure if its a din size or not though.
older ford tauruses (mid 90s) had the same thing and those are single din for sure.

Oh nice idea. I don't like the hole under the head unit so this might be two birds with one stone.

Aha, I have tried that exact RAM mount. Problem is that the iPad is fairly heavy so the worm stalk that goes up from the seat rail starts shaking/vibrating a LOT as the car moves.

I tried a bunch of ways to mount the iPad including this (which obscured my heater controls but was great for stability):

On the T4R, I went with the RAM suction mount for iPad and have it mounted near the cup holder and resting on the center console. Rock solid, discrete so I don't have to take it off and hide it when I pop into the shop and near the 12V socket to power it.

Just for reference, I don't do anything stupid like watch movies etc. while driving. The iPad is 100% for GPS and yes, the GPS apps on it are that good that they make regular Garmins look/feel obsolete.
 
you could replace the worm stalk with steel tubing instead similar to a police car type mount setup. perhaps just purchase the ball and mount head for the worm stalk then build a custom mount that bolts to the floor or even slicker utilizes the seat mounting bolts.

Basicly you can either use a ghetto window cup holder, find a place to mount the slide in cup holder, or get a little more creative with your ipad mount. I think theres even a thread somewhere in the electronic's perhaps that shows a dozen or more ways to mount Ipads with reviews and what not I'll see if i can find it real quick
 
I find there to be an abundance of cup holders, 2 in the front console, and 2 in the rear seat flip down, plus bottle holders in EVERY door. You're complaining that there's no cup holders, yet you filled the 2 available cup holders which I use every day. I would look into moving your ipad and mounting it somewhere else like others have suggested.

But seriously, what do you need an iPad in your truck right there for?

Another suggestion? Get an iPhone maybe? I've not had any need for an iPad in my car with my iPhone and Nav head unit. Like you mentioned... It's just more goodies to temp knuckleheads to smash my windows... again! Ugh...
 
I agree as well. Why do you need an iPad? It looks like it is in a horrible position to begin with. There is a reason the drink holders are down there because that is where you hands are not your eyes. You have to seriously take your eyes off the road to see it. Just do the right thing and buy a nav unit if that is what you need. Leave the iPad for looking cool at Starbucks.

LOL that is classic home made engineering right there! Thanks for the links aha, I will look into some of the other solutions to move the iPad out of the way.

Dude seriously, I know you mean it in a good way, but save the advice. The iPad as a navigation device is 5x better than a regular nav unit. Pre-loading routes, looking up business along your route, near your destination, stack ordering your stops, the GPS apps on the iPad does it all much better. I have had Garmins and I have had iPads and not going back.

Unless you mount your nav unit in front of your face, you have to take your eyes off to see and process the information anyway. iPad is no more risky.

I think if you don't want people giving you advice, you probably shouldn't post a thread showing how much of an idiot you are. I checked the date to see if it might be April 1st when I started reading this, thinking "There's no way this clown put is iPad right where the cup holders are and then posted a thread to complain about the lack of cup holders, is there?" And yet, here you are, posting this drivel.

No offense (ha, I fully intend to offend), but this has got to be one of the dumbest threads I've ever seen.

Guys guys guys, obviously he has the iPad so that he can use the Apple Maps app for his navigation needs.....:banana:


But seriously, there's not an applicable iPhone app that would work just as well?

Do you travel constantly for your job? Or is this for personal day to day use? In-dash navigation is probably just as good in an aftermarket setup... I really don't see the necessity of an iPad in a vehicle "just for navigation needs"

If you truly think this is your best and only option, you haven't done your research...
 
It is kind of silly to block your two primary cupholders with an Ipad and then complain about the lack of cup holders. c'mon now.

Not trying to pick on you but you can't honestly think having an iPad mounted below your steering wheel is just as safe as having a nav unit level or above the elevation of your steering wheel. Looking down at that Ipad gives you almost 0 periferal vision to watch the road. Also it must be tricky to use with your shifter right infront of the screen.

Your best bet in this situation is to get a mount that places your Ipad off to the side and level with your steering wheel, sort of like how police officers have their laptops mounted. there must be a product out there for mounting ipads as many delivery drivers use them now.

Or go the easy route and buy a nav head unit like everyone else. maybe you can find one that supports your app because I know my head unit can run certain iphone apps including a couple GPS ones.

When I used to be into tuning cars, I know a few people that had a "laptop mount" for netbooks so they could have their datalogging program up while driving around the streets (I didn't do it). They said they bought the mount from eBay, so you may try searching there.
