Gagues rattle and gas gague most of doesnt work.

I have a 2005 toyota 4runner limited v8 4wd with 180k miles. When I get in without touching anything the gagues will rattle a few seconds and when i crank the speed and rpm will not move till about 5 seconds then all gagues work fine but the gas gauge. However, then center console still tells me my miles per gallon and how many till empty. Any ideas of what could be wrong.

Yea. Your gauge panel is bad, or going there.

The gauges are all controlled via ECU, so there isn't a physical speedo cable to the transmission like in vehicles of the past. It kinda sounds like something is up, and that is honest to god, the only way to describe it because of the way it is controlled.

I hooked up the battery backwards about 2 months past, yea yea, and for about a week after the dials were a bit wonky but have since righted themselves.

Take a gander and you will see that the information to the gauges come via the ECU. If the information display is giving you info, then I suspect that your actual gauges are going out. Who knows why. The service manual will have a whole host of diagnostic steps for you.

I notice sometimes that the gas gauge and tach jump around sometimes after start up and after several seconds they work properly. My speedometer has acted up for years. It would start reading way of on longer trips and finally died completely last summer. I just use a gamin gps suctioned cupped over the original speedometer. You can put the gps in a mode that shows the speed real big. I actually like it better than the analog speedometer. I think you will need a need gauge assembly to correct your problem. The problem is if you get a new assembly you have to go to the dealer someplace that can set the odometer to the correct number. My odometer still works even though the speedometer does not.

When you say the gauges rattle, do you mean just the needles or the whole cluster?

If the ops rattle is what I think he is describing the needle jumps up and down about 1/4 inch rapidly. On mine after several seconds it stops doing this and then reads the correct position.
