Grease Fittings on '05 4x4

Well, I went and bought me a grease gun today. I am going to attack my 4Runner's grease fittings tomorrow afternoon. It is a 2005 4x4 SR5 (V6), and is supposed to have six fittings; three on each driveshaft.

I purchased what appears to be a decent grease gun (from Advance Auto) and a 14-ounce tube of Valvoline synthetic grease. The guy there said it was the best he had -- about $5 per tube, compared to half that for 'regular' and lithium greases.

My grease gun has the flexible hose, so getting around odd angles should not be a problem.

I do wonder, though, how much grease will it take in each fitting? Do I pump until it comes out the other end of it? How often do I need to do this? (The owner's guides says every 15k miles and I have 10k on it now.....but I want to err on the side of caution.)

Any other advice? (Wish me luck!!)

I believe there is a several page thread on this in the maintenance section. One thing I remember from reading a post by TechWrench is that its OK to grease the u-joints until the grease is forced out, but you do NOT want to over-fill the slip yoke fittings.

Apparently, the slip yoke is designed to do just that - move. If you overfill these fittings, there will be too much grease in there (causing too much compression) for these joints to be able move back and forth freely.

Swell.....make everything complicated.
:bash:

Seriously, though....I know what a U-joint looks like; but what in tarnation is a 'slip yoke'? Are there two U-joints and one slip yoke on each drive shaft? (Oh, mine is a 4x4.)

Fill me in, as I plan to grease them this afternoon sometime. Do you have any pics so that my dumbazz will recognize the difference? Just how much grease to I pump into the slip yoke if I don't want it oozing out?

Inquiring minds want to know!

THANX!!!!

Well, here goes nothing. I'm on my way outside to hit it now. I bought a new grease gun with a 14-ounce tube of Valvoline synthetic grease. That should be plenty good for all of the fittings.

I'll log on later this evening and will share my comments. Heck, maybe I will take a photo as well -- depending upon how much light I have under the truck.

this may help

Well, I crawled under there this afternoon. Jeez! Thanks to the skid plates, some of the zerks are hard to access. I had to move the vehicle just a little bit.

Anyway, I found that there are two fittings at one end of the drive shaft and one zerk at the other. And, being a 4x4, I have both a "front" and a "rear" shaft. {If I found all of them, the total is indeed six.}

I squeezed them full of grease until I saw it ooze out from a nearby orefice. Hopefully, I put in the right amount. Of course, I'll grease it again when I change my engine oil & filter in another month or so.

As for tightening the bolts, they all looked fine. No, I did not put a wrench to them......but everything seemed okay. Maybe I'll check 'em again when I crawl under there to change my oil & filter next month.

Thanks for the replies and the help!!
