Key FOB Programming
Hello all
I purchased a 2006 4Runner Ltd a few days ago from Carmax and my baby has only 1 key fob. I still have the key fob from my dearly departed 2000 4Runner (may she rest in peace). Is it possible to re-program the key fob to work with my new 4runner? If possible does this have to be done at a toyota dealership? I appreciate any insight that you all may provide! BTW I am new to this forum, so forgive me if this has been posted. |
This is really wierd, but I also traded in my 2000 ltd for a 2006 ltd., about a year ago. You didn't happen to go from black (2000) to white (2006).
Anyway, back to the subject at hand. My truck only came with one keyless remote and I too had to get a new remote and key. I bought a remote similar to the one in the link below. I paid $15 for mine on ebay in april of 2008. It works great, have not had any problems with it. The only problem was dishing out the $70 to the dealership to program the new key I bought. The remote that is in the link that I attached also comes with the programming instructions. Make sure that the FCC ID# and the IC# on the back of your remote match the numbers on the auction your looking at. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2005-...1%7C240%3A1318 According to all the listings on ebay, I don't think that it is possible to program your 2000 remote. Most auctions I have seen do not include a large spread of years. Do your research, but I don't think it is possible. |
Yes it is weird. My last 4Runner was silver and my current 4Runner is meterorite metallic. I can tell you that the 06 rides 100% better than the 00.
Thanks for the information, I will purchase another remote and have the dealer program it for me. |

When you get the keyless remote, programming instructions should come with it. You program your remote to operate your locks, windows etc.... You will only need to include the dealer if you need to buy a new key, they have to program the key to work for your vehicle. I think it has to do with the chip needed to start the vehicle, something to do with the anit-theft feature. Hope this helps. |
Don't take it to the stealership to program. It is very easy to do it yourself. If you buy a fob on ebay it should come with instructions. If not I will post them below.
Programming for a 2003 to 2005 Toyota 4 Runner When Remote transmitter added or replaced. System malfunction. How Driver's door open, key removed from ignition switch. Within 5 seconds: Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch twice. Within 40 seconds: Close and open driver's door twice. Insert and remove the key from the ignition switch. Within 40 seconds: Close and open driver's door twice. Insert the key into the ignition switch and close the driver's door. Switch ignition ON and OFF once to program a remote transmitter code whilst retaining the original codes or twice to program a remote transmitter code whilst erasing the original codes. Three times to check how many remote transmitters are currently registered or five times to erase all registered codes. Remove key from ignition switch: System should now lock and unlock vehicle once, twice or five times depending which mode has been selected. One to four times, slowly, to indicate number of remote transmitters registered. Within 40 seconds: Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 1.5 seconds - Within 3 seconds: Press LOCK button. System should now lock and unlock vehicle once to confirm registration, twice to indicate registration has failed. Within 40 seconds: Repeat button procedure to program remaining remote transmitters. NOTE: To exit programming mode: Open driver's door. NOTE: A maximum of 4 remote transmitters can be programmed. It may take a few tries and the timing must be very accurate to work but with a little patience it is easy. |

Cycle the power locks 5 times (same as before). b. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF. c. Turn the ignition to ON then back to OFF. d. Remove the key from the ignition. 5. Within 3 seconds, the power door locks should cycle (automatically) indicating successful entry into programming mode. Return to step 1 if the locks do not cycle at this point. 6. Perform these steps within 40 seconds: a. Press the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 1 second. b. Immediately after letting go of the lock and unlock buttons, press the lock button by itself and hold for 2 seconds. Repeat steps 6a and 6b--this remote has not been accepted. c. Repeat steps 6a and 6b for EACH transmitter that will operate the vehicle. Including any old transmitters. 7. Close the driver door. " |
