Advice for getting the white lettering on tires white again...

Hey all. Just picked up a second hand set of the Dunlops. The white lettering is a little faded and dirty, even after cleaning, so I thought of applying a paint or finish to try and spruce em up a bit. At first I tried white car paint- figured it was pretty durable stuff. No luck, it just flaked right off.

What do you all suggest? What can I use to get them white and popping again? :)

Comet kitchen cleanser pwder, water and a scrub brush! It works extremely well at cleaning the letters and makin them bright white again!

I agree w/ Shawk00 ... I don't like the white look.

How much did you pay for the second hand set of AT20s? Please tell me you got them cheap as hell.

Many members got rid of their Dunflop AT20s very early on. I know (2) members here picked up their brand new Sport Edition & replaced their AT20s before their first tank of gas.[/color]

I don't have any experience w/ the Dunflop AT20s...but if they were given to me for free or cheap ass hell, I would give them a run.

I always use Simple Green and a scrub brush when cleaning my tires. I cant remember the last time I had a set with the white letters out, but that has always kept my tires nice and clean.

I can see why they wouldn't be happy with the performance and would return them....:frog:;):
 
The Comet idea should work.
There is also such a thing as whitewall cleaner at the auto parts stores. I haven't seen a whitewall tire in ages, but it's also perfect for white lettering.
 
When I used to detail cars i used just an commercial grade degreaser and it cleaned up the white letters to where they almost looked brand new. Like you i like having the white lettering facing out. Give that a try. I've never tried the comet cleaner method but it sounds like it would work also.

Good catch!!

Simple Green and a old rag, works like a champ and I bet less likely to streak your rims upon contact like comet may. I would apply simple green directly to rag in order to minimize contact with the rims too.
 
Well, tried Simple Green. It definitely got it whiter and clean, but, as I suspected, the undlerying paint has faded and flaked a little, so it's back to a Sharpie oil-based white marker I picked up. So far seems to be really doing the job.
 
Grease Lightning also works great for cleaning tires and white letters. I use that followed by Aerospace 303.
