Mounting equipment to the top of dash....drilling into the top

I agree with most of the posts above.You drill into the dash, knock $1000 off the resale value, They are expensive and difficult to replace.

And nobody, I mean nobody, wants to buy a vehicle that has holes in the dash. You see that and the first thought that goes through your head is "Okay, what other half-assed stuff did the guy do?".

My suggestion was to get a remote faced radio and just mount the face wherever you want with 3M tape or velcro! Glad you decided on that option before I even mentioned it!

Some other ideas for mounting locations would be for those with advanced mounting skills, but would be pretty trick! I'll be putting in my old Icom in the flip down sunglass pocket some day, which would be closed unless I'm using it. Main unit under seat with mic attached to main unit and brought into the center console so its not in sight at all.

Another option would be to remove the stereo, replace with a single-din unit and mount the faceplate into the lower (or upper if you prefer) cubby that comes with the dash kit. Its nice having the ham radio in an easily-accessible area, although not all vehicles are really that easy, such as my truck:

Still, in such a small cab, it works quite well for me being in the dash.

What I ended up / will end up doing: I returned the radio I had and I purchased a dual bander with a removable face plate (Icom 2370a); I'll mount the brain under the driver's seat and the faceplate and mic to the dash in a discreet location. I may use the RAM mount I bought to facilitate that; still undecided.

I mounted mine to the bottom of the rear seats. This means it comes up with the seat bottoms so that the rear still lays flat. I use a ram mount to hold the face plate when I'm using it. I keep the mic/controller beside the drivers side seat. With the Kenwood I bought I was able to use CAT6 extender cables to allow the reach from the rear seat to the front. I also used a removable mount so I can bring it inside for safety, chatting or programming.
