Whos ran 285/70/17 AND 255/80/17 tires?

I’d like to hear your thoughts on it. Which you preferred and why. It’s about time to replace mine and I’m trying to choose between 255 Ridge Grapplers or 285 Wildpeak AT3W. I’m going to continue running TRD Pro wheels (which would be better suited to the 255s but I know 285s are the most popular regardless of wheel width).

I have run both. Both look great. I have the 255's on now. What would you like to know?

No difference in mileage. 255's are a bit more squirrly at high speed, but better on acceleration. They also don't brake as well.

I don't have a preference, one over the other.

Next tires will likely be true 35's

I have two sets of wheels I switch between, 285/70r17 KM2s on Trail wheels and 255/75R17 KO2s on TRD Pro wheels. So not exactly the second size you're looking at, but close.

Im averaging around 18 MPG with the 255s, and about 15 with the 285s. The 255s have been excellent as a daily and highway use tire, and also gave me no problems with mild off road use. I've been very happy with them. The skinnier tire is perfect for the TRD wheels.

I switch back to the KM2s whenever we go on more serious off road trips. They're wonderful off pavement, not so great on pavement.

I thought the TRD rims are already narrower than the regular rims.. so 285s would probably be too wide a tire?

285s are fine on Pro(Sema) wheels.

Technically, yes, the TRD wheels are too narrow for 285s. Tons of people run 285s on them with no problems though.

Thanks for the link, I’m aware of that thread but I’m specifically wanting input from people who have personally ran both sizes on their vehicle, not generic info and/or one sided opinions.

After lots of researching I’m pretty sold on 255/80/17 Ridge Grapplers, I’m trying to get first hand input before I pull the trigger.

RG in 255/80/17 will be my next tire.
I am currently on RG 285/70/17 and feel it's overkill for my needs.

I run the 285s but I use the 255 as my spare. It works well because of its thin profile it doesn't hang down as much as a 285 would. In the event I need it, I will still have a 33" tire.

I have a stock turd pro, I want to go 255/80/17, I like the skinny pizza cutter look :bravo:

This thread has been helpful! These are the two sizes I’m considering on the stock 2019 TRD Off-road Wheels. Have the 3” front and 2” rear spacer lift with JBA high castor UCAs.

From what I’m reading both should be reasonable options. 255/80R17 is my preferred choice. Likely in the Toyo Open Country AT3. If someone has experience with these tries specifically, I’m all ears!
