Faux mud flap in front of the rear tires

Those backward mud flaps are called spats, from my understanding it is tuned to reduce turbulent air around the rear wheels and it works in conjunction with the rear wheel under cover to reduce drag. See attached PDF from techinfo.toyota.com..

Wow, spats ...your just making that up! lol
Learn something new EVERY day. That's what the brits call the landing gear fairings on airplanes.

Your bloody spat fell off!:naughty:

Found this article on under-car airflow management. Kind of interesting to see some of the aero aids are applied to the 5th gen 4Runners.

I thought spats were those things we have with our wives every time we wanted to buy something?

Those little things must contribute something because the 4R has an drag coefficient of .365, which is pretty good for shed-shaped SUV. The GX, by comparison has a cd of .38, yet a Porsche 911 has about .29 - .30.

Every little bit helps i guess. I believe they serve the dual purpose of wind management - and to protect. Who would have thought a tiny piece of plastic could both serve and protect, just like LA PD.

Naw, spat is what we did on the ground yesterday.

I took those things of when I installed my N Fab nerf bars. I still have them, should I put them back on, or are the bars doing the same job?

Mine is currently undergoing degradation testing at the local landfill. I'll report back in 1000 years...

No wonder you are only getting 12 mpg and mud on your mouldings and dirt all over the place. Just go dig them up and all will be right with the world!

I just check my wifes truck and she has them also......what to do, what-to-do. I mean really, how much can they really help out with MPG.

Spat torn off???

Okay, I think somehow one of my spats got torn off. I'm not quite sure how this happened as I haven't been off road, haven't hit anything, not really sure! Just noticed it missing after I mowed the yard tonight (pulling the truck back in the garage).

So, here's my issue - I can get another spat, no problem there. But, when my spat got ripped off it looks like it put about a 2 inch tear in the molding. My question is, how should I fix that??

I've attached 2 pics - spat that is okay and torn off side.

Thanks.

Hmm, I had to remove these when installing my nerf bars.. luckily I kept them so I can put them back on when my SW sliders get in :hungry:

Perhaps rather than landfilling them, we need to experiment with a slightly larger version to determine if there is a sweet spot to aid fuel mileage (vs. looking dorky and getting in the way).

nope but I took them off if you want em
I'll take them. Where in Florida are you? Thanks.

By the way, looking at some 2013's on dealer sites I dont's see the spats on any one of them. My 2013 has the small mud flaps behind the front wheels but not the rear spats. I'm wondering if the guys who have the rear spats also have the small front flaps like I do?

Thanks Again.
