    2003 V8 T4R - Coolant leak on cold morning

I got on the horn with the dealership today. The first guy suggested trying to replace the water pump, timing belt, all all the rest. I declined all but the pump. Then I got a cal back from the first guy's supervisor and after talking, he said he hated to replace such an expensive part just...

    2003 V8 T4R - Coolant leak on cold morning

I have a 2003 4runner with 315,000 mi, V8 engine. Timing belt, water pump, and all coolant hoses were replaced at Toyota dealership at 275k in 2019. We got down to 10F (unusually cold for here) last week. I started the t4r and was letting it warm up inside for a family trip when I noticed a...

    Blown head gasket 3RZ-FE 2.7 L - - Replace engine?

I thought I would update this thread in honor of my dear, departed t4r. I replaced the head about 2.5 yrs ago, and got her up to 265k miles. Then, last weekend, she blew another head gasket and overheated while my wife was driving her. Shop says another head gasket won't last long, and a used...

    Can a 2003 V8 4runner tow a 1999 2wd 4runner? Bad idea?

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I am probably selling the car for scrap today. It indeed blew another head gasket. The shop says it's not worth putting another on, anda new motor costs over double the value of the running vehicle. Time for something new I guess.

    Can a 2003 V8 4runner tow a 1999 2wd 4runner? Bad idea?

I'm going to be brief, just got in from a 6 hr drive. My 99 2wd 4runner apparently blew the head gasket again (wife was driving, lots of smoke, oil everywhere, no froth in oil, won't turn over, had a previous head replacement, that's all I know). The car is in MS at our old home, and we are...

Overheating 2003 4runner - coolant boiling in overflow reservoir

I was running Xerex pink asian coolant, not the Toyota brand, but I think they're basically the same. You know, it was weird. I added most of the water to the reservoir, so it was clear. Then I added a liter straight to the radiator. I had trouble getting water into the radiator because of...

Overheating 2003 4runner - coolant boiling in overflow reservoir

I've got a 2003 V8 4runner with 225k miles. I've known about a slow leak in my thermostat for a while, but I have just been keeping the reservoir filled while I wait on doing the water pump, thermostat, and timing belt (cash is tight at the moment). Today, I was driving along and the check...

Replacement catalytic converter sure didn't last long (1999 4runner)

On my 1999 4runner (2.7 L 3RZ-FE 2WD), I replaced the OEM catalytic converter at 238k miles in March 2017 with an Eastern Catalytic 40685. A couple weeks ago, the new cat started rattling like rocks in a tin can. I guess it's shot. It only made it 10k miles and a little less than a year. Of...

Gas gauge stuck at zero after dealer flashed ECM

Hm...it appears they blew a bulb or a connection in the multifunction display too. (Is that the proper name for it?) The LCD is only half-lit and the fan speed and temp select wheels are only partially lit.

Gas gauge stuck at zero after dealer flashed ECM

They said they "got an error message", that's all I know. My kid was puking at home and I had to run back there after the job. I didn't think of a pinched wire, but that might be the case.

Gas gauge stuck at zero after dealer flashed ECM

Yesterday I brought my 2003 V8 4runner in to the dealer to have the cracked dash replaced under a recall. I told them specifically NOT to address the Smart Stop Update or the Floor Matt Mod recalls. Against my wishes, they attempted those two as well. After the fact, I complained and they...

Ear clamp size for tie rod / steering rack boot? 1999 4runner

Well, it ended up being about 2-5/8" diameter, but after trying 4 auto parts stores, Lowes, and Fastenal's local store, I struck out finding any ear clamps

Ear clamp size for tie rod / steering rack boot? 1999 4runner

I bought tie rods and new boots, for doing my inner and outer TRs tomorrow, but I don't like the boot clamps that came with the replacements. I want to run out and find new ear clamps tomorrow morning - does anyone know the right size? The 4runner isn't here currently for me to measure. I...
