Recovery gear opinions

Hey all I need your opinions. I have a hitch mounted shackle on order already and now I'm in the market for a tow strap and maybe some extra shackles. Let me know what you think about them and if they're a good buy.

I found this tow strap on ebay for $37+shipping:

You are bidding on a NEVER-BEEN-USED 4" x 30' Recovery/Tow Strap with a material rated breaking strength of 30,000#'s. Both ends are a triple thick twisted loop with a protective wear covering that easily fits on a recovery/tow hook. The loops also allow for an easy choker or basket configuration depending on need.

I found this shackles on ebay for $9+shipping:

The highest bidder will receive One Brand New Heavy Duty D-Ring Clevis pictured in this auction. Up for bid is One Clevis which measure 3/4" in Diameter has a useable length of 2 7/8" and has a threaded pin. The pin Diameter is 7/8". These have a working load limit of 13,000 lbs. These have many uses one example would be attaching straps or cables for vehicle recovery.

Looks like a good deal.

The Warn straps have a red strip in them to tell you if you have damaged them (overstressed). They retail for about $50-60 as I recall.

I think with careful checking periodically you can probably discard this feature. The breaking strength of the strap you show is good. Likewise 3" or 4" is excellent.

One thing to remember when buying/using recovery gear. You get what you pay for. You can't forget the stress you are going to place on these components. I go to 4wheelparts for my straps and tractor supply company for my shackles. You might also think about installing a tow hook in the front of the runner. trying to recover a vehicle from the back when its the wrong direction to pull from is very difficult. You need to have a point or two in the front.

Be careful, a tow strap and a recovery strap are two different things.

A tow strap is just that, for pulling something.

A recovery strap (or snatch strap) is built/rated for yanking something. It will stretch to a point, amplifying the force and yanking the stuck object out. A tow strap will break doing that.

Is a receiver hoop bracket better/same as a shackle bracket?

I've bought the shackles listed as they appear beefy enough and hopefully they are a quality product. I'll report back when I get them.

The tow/recovery strap I've held off until I can get some answers.

I'm leaning on a different strap than the one posted above after some reading. The Explorer Procomp is a bit more expensive but seems to but better made.

I have a Black Rat recovery kit that believe it or not, I've never had to use at all. It'as some relly stout stuff. It's the same one listed below from Expeditions West.

sharp4runr - that link you posted is enough to make your head spin.

I just bought a warn hitch shackle and an extra warn shackle. I thought about buying one of the ones I saw on ebay, probably good enough, but thought the warn might be a little better quality.
When you think about a vehicle tugging on another vehicle, could be a very scary situation if something lets loose.
I am waiting on a recovery strap that I got on ebay from lorder79. It is a 2-ply 2" by 20' rated at 40k. Overkill? I'm not sure, I'm not very edumacated in the art of recovery. Better safe than sorry.
Breaking strength, W.L.L., S.W.L. all gets a little confusing for my tiny brain.

00328 - yeah thats a lot of information to take in. After reading that article I'm now leaning towards the Explorer Pro Comp strap. It looks like a better quality product than the one I posted at the top.

Haven't been able to locate the one you're looking at, but it's probably a good idea to get one that's stronger than you actually think you'll need.

I've bought online and local. There is a rigging company down in Balto City I've gotten winch line and other things from.

Any of you gents heard of a company called Keeper(http://www.keepercorp.com)?

They have a 3"X30' with a 30k lb capacity and a 15k working load limit. See the auction below.

It looks to be a decent product by the specs listed, but I'd like to hear opinions if you've ever used it or heard anything about the company or product. It is listed as a "Make Offer" auction so I'd probably offer $40 with shipping and see if they'd do it.

Keeper Corp has been around 20+ yrs and makes real snatch straps. I still have one.

Pro Comp straps come with a warning saying they not should be used for snatching (I bought one from 4WPW, that's how I know.
However they are beefy and I might use it for a moderately stuck situation.

fourwd1 - thanks for answering. I made an offer of $35 for the Keeper recovery strap. Not sure if they'll bite, but can't hurt to ask.

It's wierd that ProComp doesn't recommend you use the strap for snatching but this company is selling it as a recovery strap. Am I missing something here?

It's called 'CYA'. Cover your ass.
They don't want to be liable should something happen.
Lotta numb nuts out there that use no common sense what-so-ever. And they're the ones who think 'sue' right away.
Can't blame the manufacturer really.
