Actually, I do more city driving. I'm leaning towards a V6 since I don't haul anything except the family. I would be inclined to go with the V8 if it had much better performance (not just 0.7 sec. difference in 0-60 time). Also, I'm thinking of getting a 2WD version because I don't plan on wandering off the asphalt.

I thought the only reason the V8 had more pick up was a lower gear in the 5 speed automatic. The V6 "only" has 4 gears so more of a compromise (I remember my dad had a auto with 3 gears). Otherwise the V6 does have more hp and is lighter and IS more fuel efficient so I really doubt the V8 gets better gas on highway. I heard the real range of MPG is 15-19 for V8 and 18-22 for V6.
For what it's worth I'm leaning toward the V6 myself. I'd only get the V8 if I was gonna tow or I had $4,000 extra for the supercharger.

Two ways of thinking about what engine to get:
Do you tow? if yes, then you should get the v8.
Is MPG a key concern for you? if yes, then you should get the v6
Both are great engines. The v8 has more torque thus will be able to have faster times regardless if it was the 4A/T or the 5A/T. The 5A/T just helps to utilize the engine better and give ya better gearing This helping you go down abit faster.
Things to consider:
v8 engine is reliable - been around for awhile but it does have a new tranny (5A/T vs the old 4A/T - have not heard any problems w/ the tranny though). the v8 comes standard with fulltime 4wd system.
v6 is a new engine - have heard issues but it's been mininal.
Since you're planning to get the 2wd version, both are the same so no issues here.
Either way you can't go wrong

Well, maybe I'm reading into this
But if you're located in Hawaii where fuel is expensive, you might wonder if there is a difference in types of fuel required for each engine.
That's why I'm waiting to drive the new Mazda 6 wagon with the 6-cyl versus just buying an Audi 1.8T - the M6 runs in regular unlead whuich here in NorCal is about 25-cents less expensive per gallon.
If the 6 takes premium and the 8 does not require it, then your mpg issues should be a wash, right?

Premium gas in Honolulu, HI is about $2.20 per gallon, while Regular is about $2.03. I only drive about 9,000 miles per year (my business office is 15 min. away from home by foot), so I'm not too concerned about fuel prices. I am, however, concerned about being able to merge into traffic when I do go on the freeways. There are a number of on-ramps in Honolulu that are notoriously short, requiring the driver to get up to freeway speed in a matter of seconds.

I would think the V8 has more on-ramp grunt - and has the 5-spd tranny, which should help acceleration times seeing as you're probably only going 0-50mph or so. Besides, V8s sound goooood when you've really got your foot in it...

Don't worry about the premium gas thing, both engines run on 87 octane. Toyota states that you can run on 87 octane but recommends using 91 for improverd performance. I have not noticed a difference in performance between the two grades. There are no knocking or pinging problems with the 87 octane in my V6.
BTW the V6 has plenty of grunt for getting on the highway, enough that it will kick in the traction control in 2Hi. So if you are concerned mainly about acceleration get a 4wd option to put power to the ground.

When I bought the 4Runner I chose the V8. Toyota's luck with V6's is not good and the V8 is essentially a Lexus that is well proven in Toyota pickups.
The main difference between the Lexus and Toyota V8's appears to be a cast iron block and no variable cam timing.
So I chose the V8 for durability. I hope the 5 speed works out because it's new, but it may be more reliable because of its simple design, getting 5 speeds out of 3 gear sets.
We should all meet back here in 3 years and see how we have done.

I am not sure what you mean...i think i am just misreading.
Lexus and Toyota ONLY have ONE V8 truck engine...the 4.7L V8. This engine has an iron-block and does not have variable valve timing (as seen on Toyota & Lexus CAR engines).
Toyota Land Cruiser & 4runner use the same V8 engine as the Lexus GX/LX.
There is no difference between Toyota and Lexus truck engines. The Tundra/Sequoia 4.7L V8 is "claimed" to be tuned slightly different, offering slightly more HP and lower torque...and runs on regular fuel. However, Land Cruiser/LX470 and 4runner/GX470 engines can also run on regular.
