01' 4Runner SR5 - Black Beast Pt II

beautiful Build and I love Black Runners since I have one. About your rear shocks are you gonna run the billie's and an additional outboard shock? Why not match the rear with a nice 2.5 fox that could be valved to match your specific weight? Keep up the great work :guitar3:

Sweet truck, I'm a big fan of BLACK! Can't wait to hear about the ARB locker install, you doing both ends? what gearing? I'm shopping the rear, where did you purchase, GL

Damn, you Candian fellas sure know how to build a 4Runner. I like how you're doing it man... everything all at once right from the get go. That is one heck of a 4Runner as it sits and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do w/it in the future. :guitar3:

Those CBI rear bumpers are mean too.
I have a feeling my savings account might be taking a hit within the next couple months.

I am of the exact mindset - why mess around and do it twice? (or more!) Front suspension transition to long travel is about all i need to 'upgrade' in the future with this set up.

CBI builds a great product - I am quite happy with mine!

Fox 2.0's are being considered for the back, the 2.5's are pretty pricey (at $400 per) and I want to add the compression adjustment option which will let me set up the compression based on the load I am carrying which is $70 per side. So... with the 2.0's with 20/75 valving and the adjustment control I am looking at under $300 per shock - I think they will fit the bill.

Definitely doing both ends - I've got a Puma air compressor sitting in my garage waiting for a bracket to get mounted on, and so ARB lockers are my choice (if I didn't specify...).

For gearing, not too sure - I want to see how the truck handles the 33's first, then consider going to 35's. I think that decision will dictate my gearing - but both (35's and gears / lockers) are a ways out. I've dented my wallet enough for the moment, I need to go and enjoy this rig!

Updates on page 1!

Do it... there is no other way to maximize the shock travel for longer than stock shocks without going into the cab. I stole it from Chaplain!

We gotta get out and wheel, I finally feel comfortable driving this rig off road! It won't let me down (besides where a locker is required...) I just need to dust off my driving skills! And adjust to a different wheelbase!

I am down for a Crowsnest Trip when I am off work! (Heading back Wednesday though... gotta pay for all this crap!)

Sweet build

City_rider,

Everything you've done as awesome. Thanks for the link to your build. Inspiration.

City_Rider - gnarly truck with some top shelf (and what's above top shelf?) mods!!! Lovin' the bumpers and the pics of some of the places you've been in your rig.

Keep up the great work and I look forward to MOAR pics!!!

what kind of rear wind deflector is that?
Looks like Toyota - only thing on it is the Yota symbol.

Damn man! That rig kicks ass!
Thanks! Been a long time coming but I am super happy with the results!

I'm back to work for a bit (around 2 weeks) and so the pictures will have to wait - certainly looking forward to getting out as soon as I am back though!

Thanks for the kind words guys! I am just now enjoying the fruits of my labour!

Did you get a custom cbi bumper? Yours lines up flush without flares, but i thought it was designed to line up with the limited flares.

do you have closeups of it? i like the way it looks. never knew toyota offered it. did it come on your 4runner when u got it or did u purchase it at the dealer?
I'll grab a close up when I'm home - it was on it when I purchased the 4Runner, I can only assume it came from the dealer originally as it was a dealer serviced vehicle and had no mods to speak of (besides a trailer brake controller).

Funny you mention that - CBI's 'standard' bumper is set up to fit the Limited models with the wider flares. There's a bit of a story to my bumper:

CBI's old website wasn't the greatest and so it did not specify the width / fender flare options. I placed my order online and thought nothing of it - my 4Runner doesn't have flares and I didn't think twice!

Low and behold, I figure this out after the bumper ships (bugger) and so I hard it turned around and sent back to CBI. After talking to Nathan (who is super helpful) we figured out the configuration I wanted and another was made to suit - in less than 2 weeks if I recall.

So ya, basically, their standard model is for the wide flares. It cost me $150 for this screw up and I thought it unacceptable - if they are available for different widths then it should be an option! I told Nathan no one should have to pay out for this error (should it happen again) and so I would call every 2 days until it was changed on their website.

2 days later (and one call) the option for width was added!

OK, maybe a read over it. But do you have any info on the shock mounts for the rear? I'd like to get some made or buy them.

I just had a local fab guy make them for me - I had the shocks on the truck already and knew they were bottoming out. He was able to place the shock mount so that it is mid travel of the 10" shock and so it works beautifully for my purposes. Enough up travel that it bottoms out on the Sonoran Extended Bump Stops before the shock body.

So... My junk was stolen from my place - between the 17th and 21st. I'm not home so I don't have a clue what happened but the roommate filled me in on what he could.

Awesome. Just awesome.
