'01 trans cooler mod question

I've got an '01 with 74k miles. For preventative maint. Do I need to consider the trans cooler bypass?

If so, can I leave the stock radiator and some how plug the tranny cooler portion? I'm not clear on that aspect of the mod.

I did the trans cooler as a piece of mind. You could put a new radiator in as well. They are around the same price but the trans cooler mod is cheaper by alittle bit. I just ran a piece of tranny line from the inlet and outlet on the radiator to plug it off.
 
A smart thing to do if you bypass the radiator is to install a trans temp gauge to monitor the temperature. You may find that you need two coolers if you are running above 180* In the summer. In the winter, you may need to cover one of then if its running below 120*. Essentially you will manaully have to control the extreme conditions the way your radiator modulates the temps automatically for you. For $120 for a new radiator and $60 for a cooler, I'd do both.

Do most replace with the same radiator that came stock or is there an option without the intergraded trans cooler?
 
I agree on the temp gauge...you WANT to know what the temp is when you re-engineer your transmission cooling. I towed with mine today (55 degrees outside) and noticed that if I didn't turn off the overdrive the temp shot up to 206 degrees running 55 down the hwy, and if I turned off overdrive (I usually do, this was a test of the difference in temps) the temp dropped to 167 degrees, almost a 40 degree difference, on a 55 degree day! Gotta love the scangauge :)

The overdrive is a luxury setting, meaning the torque converter isn't always locked up so you get a smoother ride. However, the transmission creates more heat when the converter isnt locked. So by dropping to 4th gear and locking the converter, the trans temp should drop as you saw, even tho the engine is spinning faster.

The owner I work with has a fleet mechanic that has been in the business for 30+ years and is a Toyota fanatic too. His shop has tried running the aux trans coolers on larger, heavy duty commercial trucks and he stated that they always go back to running the aux cooler after the trans fluid has ran thru the internal, radiator cooler first. Basically, air can't cool the temps as efficiently as the liquid can, with the radiator acting as a "pre-cooler".

He suggest I put a new radiator in and hook up the aux cooler after it runs through the radiator cooler.

Obviously, this still does not isolate the trans fluid from the possibility of mixing with the coolant, but how likely is this dilemma anyway? ( I've got 74k on factory rad, but it is 11 years old.)

I plan on doing these installs this weekend with a Magnefine filter as well. Do you recommend installing the filter on the supply to the radiator or exit of tranny cooler? Paperwork says in the outlet if vehicle is over 5000 miles but I'm wondering if the new radiator qualifies for "less than 5000". I assume the purpose of installing in the inlet line is to prevent any materials from getting into the radiator in the first place (as well as prevent from returning to ATF pan). Also, what is the best way to determine which ATF line is the feed and which is the return? I have a 3rd Gen SR5 4WD. Thanks for any input.
 
Here is some information.
Transmission Oil
You can also use a bypass thermostat to keep it in the proper range, but of course have a temperature gage so you know it is all working correctly.
 
Radiator Cleaning?

I am replacing my radiator with a Koyo A1998 and adding the B&M 70264 cooler with Magnefine filter this weekend. I had planned on flushing and cleaning the cooling system with one of the cleaners (Peak or Prestone). Would this be a waste of time and money since I am replacing the radiator? Or will it do some good in the heater core and engine? Also, can someone guide me to the best method for determining which ATF hose is the feed and which is the return from the stock cooler?

I look at it this way. What ever oil re-enters the transmission should be clean. So its the last step before the transmission.

The driver's side is the return to transmission. But an easy way to check is to disconnect one port and direct two hoses in a bucket. start the motor for 2-3 seconds and stop it. only one of the hoses will be ejecting fluid.
