01 with clunk/pop noise

i checked regarding the lower ball joints and was told my truck didn't qualify for the 2005 recall. this noise i have been hearing soon after i bought it. i am thinking perhaps the endlinks need to be replaced. in which case, if i do, what are some good choices?

regarding LBJ's, what can i do to upgrade these? i checked them along with everything else and they seem tight, but my tires are cupped/scalloped. maybe there is just enough play there somewhere to cause this. any ideas?:roadkill::roadkill::roadkill:

More info on the "clunk" please
Under what circumstances does it present itself
Does it happen after hard braking?
might be driveshaft slip needs fresh grease

As far as tires, when was last alignment?
What tire brand, size, wheel offset?
What is your current pressure?
How many miles on tires?

left or right hard turn or hit a bump/hole, on left side
i have had it for a month so no alignment yet
firestone destination, factory size/wheel 16
don't know, but about 40% tread, that is how i bought it.

Time to get a little dirty. Crawl underneath and see if anything is broken. You might find have a broken end link or something obvious.

Then I would jack up the front and do a few shakes of the tires. Try to mimic the sound. Took 4 guys at a Toyota dealership to find clunk and it turns out it was a loose bolt on a rear control arm. Too many moving parts to just start replacing and hoping you hit it.

you also might want to remember to check you LCA and UCA bushings for any play. this can cause the issue you described as well. Jack up the front and grab you front wheel and see if you can move it in and out of the wheel well.

done that already, and both sides are tight. shocks aren't leaking or leaning, truck sits straight and level on all corners. i will replace the end links and take it from there. although no obvious signs, perhaps the bushings are giving enough to cause the noise.

top hat/ lower shocks studs/bolt tight?

Is the battery strap tightened down?

just thinking what else is down there...

LBJs- some have gone with Tacoma LBJs. They are bigger but they do increase the turning radius of the rig and you have to change to Taco OTREs too. The stock 4runner LBJs usually last close to 200,000 miles. Either way, spend the money and ONLY buy Toyota OE parts. Other brands usually show major wear after as little as 20,000 miles.

(There is a huge thread here on Taco LBJs)

LBJ failure happens when they are neglected. If you look at the mass amount of suspension kits out there, most of them do not replace the LBJ but replace UCA and LCA. Just some food for thought about looking for upgrades for your LBJs.

I will say it is nearly mandatory to use OEM LBJ though. I would consider anything but OEM LBJ to be neglected.
