'03 V6 - no more clatter on synthetic oil!

My first oil change at 56k: Shell Rotella T6 synthetic 5W40, and Toyota filter. I should've done this when I bought it, but I was sent to five weeks of 737 school in Dallas, and it looked like it came with new oil and a new Toyota filter.

So my first impression is the noisy clatter is gone, I have a quiet running engine now! There aren't too many things I dislike about this truck, but that clatter did annoy me. I'll see how it sounds with 5k on this oil, but experience with this oil has been very good.

I changed all my vehicles from Mobil1 to Rotella synthetic years ago, it seems to hold up better, and my old Land Cruisers stopped leaking. They really leaked with Mobil1, I ended up epoxying my garage floor to make cleanup easier.

As it's gotten colder, my starter has cranked slower and longer in the mornings. 17*F this morning, and a nice quick start. Gotta love synthetic oil.

Shell Rotella all the way....

I use a WIX or a Napa Gold Oil Filter with Shell Rotella T6, Full Synthetic, 05W-40 in my 1997 SR5, 4 WD, V6.

Intead of using the small "Tea Cup" size Oil Filters, I use a longer filter. For the NAPA Gold I use the FL 1516 instead of the prescribed smaller 1348. For the WIX, I use the 51516 instead of the smaller 51348.

Instead of using 5 1/2 quarts of oil, I use the full 6 quarts of oil with the oil change. I run out the oil to 8K to 9K and the TBN still has life left in th

I'm going to give whirl. I am on ENEOS 5w-40 now and loving it! The Rotella 5w-40 is a great and fairly inexpensive premium oil.

A good filter choice might be the PL25230, it's just like the 1516 or PL20195 BUT has an anti-drain valve on the output side too. The V6's seem to drain the filters a bit. I guess that's the downside of the awesome mounting location and the only reason I don't have a 1515 or PL30001 on mine.

The 4Runner calls for 5W30. Why did you put in a heavier weight oil?

I'm pretty sure he picked that because Rotella T6 came out with only 40 and i've read it flows very well in cold weather as well.

Well, the "5" is the same...it's just that the oil is heavier once it gets hot.

i shouldnt have any problems swapping over to synthetic should I. Especially if i try this oil??

I know what that 0w, 5w and 10w means.

But I read that shell rotella T6 perform very well in any condition of weather and any gasoline cars that recommand for 5w30.

I do know T6 came in only 5w/15w40 and people seems choose T6 over T5 or T.

Do you think 40 is too heavy for 4runner?

I'm not an oil expert. But mine is at close to 110k, I only used any dino oil that out there and switching to synthetic on my next oil change.

IMO, mine running strong with no leak. But now i drive a lot(about 200+ milies a day)and live in TX. So I think thicker/synthetic will better for my choice.

If I'm going to stick with 5w30 synthetic, I would go pennzoil ultra/plat or if money isn't issue amsoil XL is good choice too. (using amsoil on my other vehicle but prob will switch to other brand so I can use same oil on my both of my cars.)

I have used synthetic motor oil in my 2008 V6 T4R since I made my first oil change at 1000 miles. My engine now has 15,000 miles after two years. I can't tell you the brand, but it is what my Toyota Dealer uses. I figured what ever they use should be fine. I have some engine noise upon start up but it quites down after a few minutes running.

I have run Shell gasolines for many years with good results. I'll check out the Shell Rotella. I have an oil change due in another 400 miles.

I hope you don't mine me asking..., how much they charge for syn oil change at dealer? (i've got oil change at dealer before but never pay for syn.)

If you still have a warranty, i will stick with 5w30. There are plenty good good good brand oil out there for 5w30.

I think you should ask your dealer about what oil they putting in your car. What brand, using bottle? or drum? or recycled? It will be fine, but i think it would be very helpful if you know what they putting in your car.

your driving style will have a much larger impact on the health of your vehicle than oil ever will assuming you maintain the beast per the manual.
