04 V6 Ltd 90K Service?

My dad's 04 V6 just hit 90,000 miles and I'm looking to do some scheduled maintenance for him. Normally he takes it to the corner garage for oil changes and whatnot. For this particular service I'd like to do a few things instead of letting the local shop do it, to make sure it's done right. My dad ran a small business and depended on the local neighborhood for his livelyhood, and insisted he put money back in neighborhood businesses. That's why he goes to the local mechanic instead of the dealer. I'd like to make sure the coolant and tranny fluid are replaced with Toyota SLL antifreeze and T-IV ATF rather than some universal stuff the shop might use. I'd do all the regular maintenance for my dad except I live 500 miles away. I don't have the FSM so I'm hoping to get some info here.

Coolant drain and fill-

Are there accessible block drains? If so, what are the torque values?

I believe the 04 V6 tranny was the last one before switching to WS fluid? Does it use T-IV? What is the torque on the drain plug? Should I get a new plug gasket? If so, I have a bunch of copper washers. Anyone know what size?

Spark plugs were changed at 60k by the local mechanic, type unknown. There's probably a few other things that are due, but I see no harm in letting the local guy do those. (Air filter, serpentine belt, oil, etc.) I might flush the brakes. The local has bled the brakes when they change the pads. There's no indication however that they've ever flushed the old fluid out of the brake system.

Check out the "Maintenance" thread/forum. You'll find a bunch of links to things you can easily do at home. I'd provide links but I'd end up linking the whole forum.

For whatever T4R.org doesn't have, check some of the maintenance threads on Tacoma World. The 2nd Gen Tacomas run the same 1GR-FE V6 engine that our 4Runners do.

If you can i would get new crush washers, you will spend under $10 on new ones for gear oil and tranny. It might be a good idea for you to do everything in one shot to help your dad out and pretty much not have to worry about anything for another 30k.
rear, front and transfer gear oil
spark plugs use oem
tranny drain and fill
cabin filter
air filter
clean throttle body
drain coolant
serpentine belt

All the fill holes are easy to get to but i would recommend a hand pump or a fancy gear oil funnel. Loosen drain bolts first, you should be able to find torque specs around here somewhere.

I've got a 2004 V6 myself and have recently done all of the recommended service myself for that mileage. It is all doable from a home garage. My go to manual is the Haynes repair Manual for 2003-2009 years' easily findable online and some auto stores. Each procedure (maintenance and way beyond) is walked through with good explanations including all torque specs, would highly recommend.

Here is some random torque specs for general maintenance items:

Auto trans filler bolts 84 in-lbs (not ft-lbs)
Auto trans drain plug (2004) 21 ft-lbs (post 2005 15 ft-lbs)
Auto trans fluid pan bolts 39 in-lbs (not ft-lbs)
Drive belt tensioner mounting fasteners V6 27 ft-lbs
Transfer case filler plug and drain plug 27 ft-lbs
Front differential (4WD models) fill/drain plug 29 ft-lbs
Rear differential fill/drain plug 36 ft-lbs
Spark plugs 180 in-lbs (not ft-lbs)
Engine oil drain plugs 30 ft-lbs
wheel lug nuts 83 ft-lbs

Coolant block drain is on drivers side just under exhaust headers. Hard to see but I found it easiest to see looking through left wheel well if remove pinned in splash guard aft of uca. I don't have a a pic but there is one somewhere in forum
Torque for engine drain plug is 9 ft-lbs as per 2005 manual

Thanks for posting that page. That's helpful.

That drawing shows two block drains, one on right and left side of the block. It does at first look like the right side drain is on top of the motor. It takes a little imagination to figure out where it is actually located. It should be the same height as the drivers side drain, and perhaps more rearward. Two drawings of left and right sides would have been better. What was the illustrator thinking?

That page also shows the torque for the block drains (9 ft-lb.). I was looking for that value. Thanks again.

makes sense, cant drain form the top now can ya...
yup 2 drawings would have solved that issue.
