05+ sealed transmission service @ dealer, anyone had issues post-service?

I just bought my 07' with 160k miles. It drives fine, no indication of transmission problems first and foremost. All the fluids/maintenance besides oil were neglected, all gear oil, ect.

I bought WL fluid from the dealer, the service department now is telling me it's only $96 for them to get it up to temp, flush it, do the procedure. Now I'm by all means, a DIY person, I did every other service already. However, I need a way to monitor temp (not a fan of the jumper), I need a new siphon pump, measured container to do the fill an flush. It's actually WORTH $96 to me to have someone do this procedure if the flush isn't known to cause issues.

Has anyone experienced or known this to be a problem with the DEALER service versus the drain/fill method you find across the forums? Any words of advice, IE: maybe have dealer note transmission is good before hand to cover my ass?

Thanks for the insight.

I bought my '07 with 151K miles just about a month ago and debated the same myself. Ended up deciding to do the transmission service myself largely because it gives me an opportunity to get to know my Runner better while i'm working on it and I have a chance to set all the baselines myself for future service...no mystery of what the dealer may or may not have done and if something gets screwed up along the way I know who to blame.

$96 is a decent deal to have it done by a dealer though, so maybe worth saving yourself a bit of time. In my case I did the filter too, so it was going to be a bit more.

For temperature, I picked up a bluetooth ODB2 scan tool and used the torque pro app on Android. Saves me the trouble of the jumper, plus it's a pretty cool app.

I did some additional searching after making this, different keywords brought up some solid posts from the past. I decided to do this myself also. I wasn't "afraid" of it necessarily, but I didn't want to dump a bunch of money on shit I don't need or use except for this.

I went and got a Wix filter for the trans, Bosch OBD scanner with live data streaming (saw that bluetooth module as well). I will be draining pan, then removing and catching fluid, change filter, clean off magnets, re-assemble, refill what came out, then pulling return line, draining 2.5, fill 2.5, ect until I either run out or it looks clean.

Oh, also got 2' of 3/8" hose for the return line. I found a paint bucket that is clear and has precise measurements already on the side for measuring emptied content.

Should be a "fun" time. So long as my new siphon pump doesn't burst a line in my face like they usually do lol.

FWIW i regret changing the filter. not necessary whatsoever. only upside was i got to see what the magnets look like. no issues there so it was a peace of mind. however, when bolting the pan back on i snapped 3 bolts. used to torque wrench too. i think sand got in the threads. stupid mistake, but no leaks.

just something to consider...if you want to look at the magnets go for it. if you're worried about the filter...dont bother. its a mesh screen and nothing is there.

Hmm, thanks for that insight. I didn't split the filter, but I already did the job on Saturday.

It went "good" overall, but I had some issues with the tools I bought lol. The magnet inspection was worth the $35 a filter cost to me. I just threw red RTV around the pan gasket and snugged them tight by hand. I found a few people saying torque spec was like 3-4 ft lb's equivalent, an I probably did 10-12. Nothing snapped, I soaked every fastener with PB blaster the day before just to be on the cautious side.

My Milwaukee impact took them all out no problem, ran all bolt's up by hand after cleaning the surfaces/magnet's, ect. I had a very minimal coating on the magnets. No "shavings" or anything to be remotely concerned with. Fluid looked like diesel oil as a friend stated. Pretty impressed how good everything looked, an now performs given the 160k miles it's gone with no maintenance. Shifts so smooth you can barely feel it now, had to watch the tach to see for myself the first drive.
