I think so, looking at the pictures here:

The best filter for the V8 is the Japanese-made Denso xxx-20004, but it's no longer imported into the States. It has a pre-lubed gasket and resin core. Although it's really for the 2UZ, it fits a bunch of Toyota engines.

The 4Runner filter 90915-yzzd301 from the dealer (made in usa) is probably very similar to the Supra filter 08922-02011 pictured above. The 20004 looks better, and came on the truck, from the factory.

Other than the irritating difficulty of a filter that's very hard to remove, there is a danger that the sealing ring at the base of the filter will remain on the block and not come off with the oil filter. If you don't catch this, and just screw the new filter on, the stacked sealing rings will likely leak (but not necessarily immediately) and that can be a real mess. It looks like Honda CRVs are having a terrible time with just this sort of problem, and it has led to a rash of fires because the oil ends up getting on the exhaust manifold.

I once worked at a tire and lube shop - we were allowed to change oil on our own vehicles there, but had to provide the oil and filters. One day, one of my co-workers brought his classic Mustang in for an oil change. Well, he put the new filter on without checking to see if the old seal came off with the filter (it didn't). We got to mop all 5 quarts of new oil off the shop floor.

just to clarify for my slow brain, what toyota filter should i be running on my v8? i have been using the yzzd3. if i wanted to larger one, what is the model number to pick it up at the dealer? thanks!
