06-09 Rear Bumper on 03-05

Hey guys,

Recently I got rear ended and had always planned on getting an 06-09 rear bumper instead of the 03-05 one. So this was a great opportunity to get it done, since the person's insurance was going to pay for it and was just as much as one extension of the 03-05 bumper. Well the body shop called me today, they said the 06-09 rear bumper was sticking out, didn't tell me exactly where it was sticking out, but that's all they said. Can anyone confirm that it doesn't fit properly or if it does.

I found this thread. Looks like it won't work because of the flares being different.

The rear flares are different. You could try and replace the rear flares? But I think you will need new door trim to match. So in reality it isn't a cheap easy thing..

I thought it was just direct, but I guess Toyota wanted to be a PITA on this one

Well if nothing ever changed over the 7 years on a generation it would be kind of boring I would think. Nobody to blame but yourself on that one!

I like them better as well, maybe because that's what I have.

Usually car company's keep certain aspects the same on the same generation.

Looks more "truck-ish". PLUS, if you want, you can fab a light in the red reflector! But I think the real reason more folks don't do it b/c it's too much of a PAIN to change it out for the newer bumper.

Usually car company's keep certain aspects the same on the same generation.

Absolutely, Hoods, doors, fenders, etc. But small things and cosmetic pieces always change, grills, bumpers, lights. That's what makes the generation years to be different.

there is a 03-05 style rear bumper that fits the 06-09 but there is no 06-09 bumper i have seen that fits an 03-05

Love the "SURF", but that craptastic spoiler just ruins everything.

Same here; IMHO (subjective) : going from 03-05 rear bumper to 06+ style in essence means going to cheaper looking, “egg” style design to make back of the 4Runner look more like Jeep Cherokee of that era…

All the cladding must be replaced for the bumper to fit properly. Quarters to doors, to front fenders to front bumper. ALso the rocker molding will need to be changed beacuse the doors have to be changed. The 06-09 bumpers also mount differently. The rear mounts are in the same location behind the bumper bnut they are shaped differently because the 06-09 bumper sits a little lower on the sides. And all the 06-09 cladding is also about 1/2" wider than the 03-05
