My JBL Synthesis started doing the same thing about 2 months ago. If it is hot out, it spits out CD's and also the display is blank and the knobs do nothing - though the steering wheel controls still work.
Took it to the dealer when I had a TSB performed for for the aux jack noise. I mentioned it to them but of course since it was not doing it in front of them I was out of luck.
Last week I hopped into go to lunch and it did it again - it was pretty warm out. I drove straight to the dealer and showed a service writer. She acknowledged the problem and said she would order me a brand new unit. Should be here sometime this week.
My mileage is just over 34K so I guess I got lucky I didn't go over 36K and it will be covered under warranty.

I am new to this forum. I just bought a 2008 4runner Sport Edition in June. It has the JBL synthesis sound system, and I am having the same problem!
I called the local Toyota dealership, and talked to the service department. They told me to bring it in to have it checked out. I tried to explain that the problem doesn't happen every time I drive the vehicle, but it seems to happen every 3 days or so.
I want this to be hassle free, but I am afraid that I am going to take my 4runner in and if it doesn't have the problem, they won't replace it. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
By the way this forum rocks!! I have been following it since before I bought my 4runner and I am excited to be a member here!
