06 V8 K&N intake!!

I wrote a good bit on my impressions of the kit and the differences I saw in this thread. Read through it and it should answer your question.
 
I called K&N this morning and they are overnighting me another
of part #08698

I talked with an engineer on the phone and asked him again about part number #08690

He said I wouldn't need it, I asked him if they could send it anyway so in case it was what I needed and I had my intake apart ...he said they would send it too, but it was not right..

oh well, I will try and install it later this week, and update this thread with my results.

I think they are hearing from us T4R owners because as soon as I mentioned step 14 in the instructions that referred to 08690 he knew exactly what I was talking about....
 
What is this engineer's name and ext. # at K&N? I don't know why he insists on the wrong part being the one that everyone needs, but I would like to talk to him and explain the situation. Im sure the more he hears this from people he will start to get the picture.
 
Unfortunately I am another member who also purchased this kit and was missing a hose as well. I talked to a guy Leon Collins at K&N who was unhelpful in sending me a new hose. I was able to get one at a local speed shop. But yeah hose 08698 is too big for the throttle body. 08690 would be a better fit. I would call them back and have them send you hose 08690.

why is it that both K&N and Volant can't make a intake that will just fit. for the price I would think it should. still not to sure which one I want. hear alot of good things about the Volant so far.

do you have any Volant in stock in case I choose that one over K&N?

Let me know what you hear from them when you talk to them.. The number listed is a generic phone number to their customer support, you need to get someone on the phone and then ask to be transferred to Nick, the guy Jason listed. I talked to Leon that someone just mentioned in the thread. I am just curious what you get for an explanation. I wish I lived out by K&N so I could drive over and they could look at the fit on the intake themselves.

Since you guys have actually installed it I think it would be good for them to hear from you so you can talk about part #08698
being too big for the intake.

Also ask Nick what year of 4R he personally fit this on....
 
All right, just to update this thread again. I installed the K&N intake on Friday...

I used part number #08698 to attach to the throttle body as the engineer at K&N insisted. Here's my feedback....yes the hose is a little too large in diameter but when I tightened it down with the hose clamp it was just fine. It is not going anywhere.....I tried to pull it off and there is no way it is going to come off with a clamp on it, there were also no air leaks after my complete install at this point.

So in my opinion 08698 works fine.....with a hose clamp tightened on it. As Deaner and etom pointed out 08690 is a little tighter fit and I am sure will work out just as well. But I guess I will go with what the engineer at K&N says, so if it fails at this point for some reason I can take this up with them. Just make sure you have enough part numbers in your kit before you start install.


Install note: There is another mistake in the directions as well.. Just and FYI for anyone else installing this....

Step 8 says to install bracket (070632)....But what do you know this is not the bracket in the kit. The bracket they ship and refer to in the parts list is Part W (07158) This bracket works just fine, just not labeled right in the instructions. Hopefully this keeps you from searching for a lost part like I did...

Install took about an hour - hour and half with the help of a friend. Took a while of looking at photos in directions, as they are photos for an '05 and i have an '06 and there are slight differences in hole location/tube locations, but everything fit great.

Bottom Line: Deaner and etom are right, the sound this has is pretty dang cool....As Deaner said the sound alone is probably worth it. I have notice a little more pep with the added HP. As far as gas mileage I am sure I will be a little low this tank, because I have been gunning it to listen to it, hard not to do!! It sounds mean off the line.

Now onto that dang harmonic droning noise that occurs between 70-75mph, that has been discussed on other threads. And I have this occuring on my '06 (yes this was there before K&N install)
 
Those with the intakes. . .How did u all reset the ecu, unhook the neg. battery terminal or pull out the ecu fuse?

Unplugged neg. battery terminal....

Just need to recalibrate windows after this....

If you don't want to unplug anything the ecu will recalibrate after awhile. Same as installing a K&N airfilter alone....I think people have said after a couple tanks of gas..
 
I ordered the 63 series intake from AJ-USA out of California. I've ordered some K&N stuff from them before and they send me e-mails with specials and keywords for discounts.

Got mine the day before Thanksgiving. Pretty good deal, too. It was regularly $250 with free shipping and an e-mail had a keyword for another 10% off any single item. So got it for $225, shipped, no tax.

Looked through the kit I received since I've been reading these posts about the hose couplers. My kit has 2 of the 08698 couplers. Still not entirely clear if that's what you want. Sounds like some people think it should be one of each,(08698 + the other one that's a little smaller diameter) while others have used two of the 08698. Anyway, I got two of the 06898s. Haven't found time yet to do the install. Will probably wait until after I get the vapor pump replaced under warranty (check engine light codes) so they don't pull some chicken-sh*t move and blame the trouble on the new intake.
 
Well at least you got 2 of 08698! These will be fine, I have had mine on for two weeks now and no problems. Once you use the hose clamp on the 08698 that goes over the intake it will clamp down tight. Like I said I went with what the K&N engineer said and used 08698.

But it is really hard not to drop the truck into 4 and give it some gas. The sound really is cool...
 
So, my 76 year old mom is right...it is just for noise? I had the TRD exhaust installed and she went for the first ride ever in the vehicle. She asked me, "So, is that exhaust actually doing something, or is it just for noise?. Sounds like she'll love it with the intake! Seriously, it does feel a little peppier with the exhaust and the mileage is slightly better. I've been pretty good about not lead-footin' it.

Looking forward to seeing what gains I get with both the TRD exhaust and the intake. Oh, and the sound, too!

I looked through the instructions and it has that glitch with the bracket in step 8. Thanks for the heads-up. It also has one additional step, #31, "Go out and floor it". :p

Ha your mom sounded like my buddy who helped me install it....he goes what is this doing??? I told him it was adding 13 HP to the truck....but the throaty V8 sound was going to be cool too.

I will see if I can find a good way to record the sound, so when you are finished we can compare sound with the intake with just stock exhaust plus Valor tip and then yours with the exhaust and intake..

But for me this was the added HP I was looking for...and the new sound was a nice second benefit......it is only loud if I want to lead foot it...its not one of those sounds where people hear you coming for two blocks. Just a nice deep throaty V8 sound when you get on the gas.

if you thought it felt peppier with the TRD exhaust wait until you install the intake. for me i didn't feel anything with the exhaust alone, but once i installed the intake it felt a lot peppier.
 
Ok guys I found a K&N hose that reduces from 3.5" to 3.25". The part no. is 08051. Just got it from Summit Racing and installed it. It fits perfect. It's the right size for the intake tube and the throttle body. This is what the engineers at K&N should of used.

Thanks SERNNR, yep that looks like the hose that would be the winner... the tapered design makes perfect sense....I guess since I am fully installed already, I will leave it as is....but this is good to know this part number exists.

Actually, $225, just for the sound. :D Maybe my old mom was right about the expensive new doo-hickey that does something to the thing-a-ma-bob.
