07 V8 4x4 Zerk Fitting Pics

Jake Crossett, service advisor at Toyota Irvine, zerked/greased my truck up. Ask for him and he'll know what to do as I referenced this thread as a call for help. Thanks.

Hey guys, so I've been greasing my zerks for about a year now every since I found this thread. However I went to give them a few squirts today and noticed the grease wasn't going in right on the front slip yoke. After looking at it closer it appears the seal on the end of the slip yoke is gone. All I can think is that it must have blown off under pressure. Is that what it looks like to you guys? It certainly isn't able to hold grease in there so I can't keep it lubed at all like this...

Best grease if I am using just 1

I know that Toyota recommends two different types of grease (1 for U joints and 1 for slip yoke) but what would be the best grease to use if I am only going to use one. I don't feel like having to grease guns in my tool collection. Links would be appreciated. I have read through all 9 pages of this thread and I am still not sure. I purchased Mobil1 Synthetic Grease (red) but am not sure if there is a better one that would be 'more' compatible with both. Thanks in advance.

So mobile 1 grease?

About to have my car serviced, Any thing else I should have them grease while they are there besides the ones in this picture?

Thanks.

Did mine for the first time today. Very easy and the pictures were great. Very glad someone spelled out that there are 6 zerks to hit.

I used Mobil 1 for everything. Only thing I'm not sure on is exactly how much grease to use for the main shaft. I put in something like 20 squirts and at the rear of the front shaft and it just kept taking it (queue immature snickering here). Any inputs?

Thanks

Sounds like Mobil-1 Synthetic Grease seems to be commonly used here for the zerks.

And 2WD version have zero zerks eh, not even the back?

just did this today..

when i did the yolk.. eventually i felt back pressure in the gun handle and stopped..

the inside zerks.. I pumped until i heard the crackling..

hope i did it right.. seems to drive smoother.. but might be the placebo effect..

Can someone explain wouldn't the grease just escape the part so that's how much grease you want?

I want to do this maint but I don't want to blow any seals. If you are doing some pumps an nothing come out the other side then where does the grease go each time you do this.. if it is a "one way" street?

Hopefully I will get this taken care of this weekend. Thanks for all the info and pics.

Greasing the yoke

I bought a LockNLube grease nipple to do this. This enables one to lock the grease gun on the nipple and the use both hands to pump it. On my 2008 4x4 I can do this without jacking the runner up on my driveway .I grease the yoke every 6000 miles or so and the prop nipples every 12000.My experience is that the thicker the better for the yoke ,so use Valvoline Moly for Fords (label) and when i used synthetic it seemed to need it done more often as the synthetics are thinner. If I leave it longer than 5-6000miles in the summer the clunk comes back earlier. One of these days I will get around to finding a used shaft from the Lexus and fit that but this is my recommendation. The LockN Lube attachment costs about $29 on line but it is well worth it when lying on your back trying to keep the grease gun on the nipple pumpling grease at the same time.

I did mine a few days ago because I was having some pretty bad clucking. So far so good. I used green grease like someone else mentioned. Here's a short clip pumping out the old stuff.

Photobucket is no longer allowing public pic sharing.

Eric the Car Guy has a series of videos maintaining an 04 4runner.

This one is for the drive line. Go the the last 10 mins for lubing the fittings.

I've had this "Clunk" issue since I first got it - and pardon my lack of automotive know how, I'm here and trying to improve - and honestly chalked it up to a rust issue. I accidentally came across this thread while reading another build thread - The time I've wasted in the middle of the night instead of studying HA!

Anyway down to this thread business - I'm going to attempt this later today after class/work and I'll post my results. My quick comments and questions from reading these 9 pages though:

People are arguing about pump count but one thing I noticed is that people are using different sized grease guns.... If this is relevant idk how it wasn't addressed before, and means pump count can be thrown out the window on this thread.
Also, I'm going to go with trying just a little the first go around - especially in the front - and see if that solves the problem. If not I guess I've got no choice then to just pump until I see the old stuff come out. I'm also planning on using just the one grease - Pink Mobil 1 stuff mentioned.

If anyone see's any errors in my statement, please correct me! As I'm here looking for advice. Thanks to everyone who has already contributed and will contribute after this.

edit: ZebRuaj I saw this was in the maintenance section and was wondering how long it'd take for someone to notice this post - Hence I figured I'd @ somebody and you just had the most recent activity on it. Do you have any input for me? Thanks in advance!
