My sympathies are out for the families and victims of those who were killed this morning. It seems like this type of stuff is all too common and it's a crying shame!

If only we lived in a world where carrying a firearm was encouraged maybe this could have been avoided or at the very least, less casualties.

He's absolutely correct. Instead of cowering under a desk or running, taking cover and returning fire sounds like a much more agreeable alternative.

Military bases are prime targets. Weapons are prohibited, but people are rarely searched. I go onto the base here often as a visiting civilian and they barely check anything. I could easily be strapped with 2 or 3 pistols and enough ammo to kill 30-40 people and go right in. Of course I would never do that.

I agree. I think it's got a lot to do with the way the media gives these guys attention. I'd prefer it if the attention was given to the victims, and we didn't even know the shooters name.

Could not agree more with this. My heartfelt prayers to the victims and their loved ones.

Though we have lived through some very troubled times, I take refuge in the fact that this world is full of good people who are always doing good unto others.

I totally agree! This a**hole already has his face and bio on every news outlet in the the world only hours after the crime. I think these guys want to "leave their mark" before ending their own miserable lives. Why do we focus on these scumbags instead of the victims or the heros who stop them?

Is it really that forbidden to admit as a society that we may need a little help with homicide? Why do we have all these suicide hotlines and not one homicide hotline? It really irritates me that suicide awareness is all over the place and no one has mentioned anything about homicide awareness or how to recognize it before it happens.

You CAN see the signs before it happens. Put down the game controller, drop the T.V. remote and pay attention to the people around you and what they are communicating to you. Listen and more importantly, watch. Educate yourself in homicidal prediction. In a world like today’s, it may just save your life.

My condolences to the friend and families of the lost ones. We have already had too many. It breaks my heart to see us in a losing battle with an enemy that is one of our own.

We have a social problem. Obviously some people have dropped their moral compass on the ground and stomped on that shit because we do some seriously messed up stuff to our own.

It's a growing social and moral. What seemed outlandish 30 years ago (Madonna) is only child's play today. (thanks Miley Cyrus) I am not fond of mentioning either but this is an outstanding example of our decent on what is and is not okay.

Do you think that firearms should be allowed to be carried by civilians when working on military property? Please come out and just say so if that is what you think.

It is in bad form (best way I can say it) for anyone to turn a tragedy like this into a political debate before the bodies are even buried. Many of the dead were us active duty service members. I know you served and believe you have good intentions but I just disagree with the beginning of this thread.

I am the last person who would want to disrespect a deceased service member. Especially one who was killed this way! But the fact remains that time after time we still don't learn from our lessons. Yes, I am suggesting that everyone be able to carry even if on military bases. Who is better to carry than those trained to use firearms.

Please don't take this as me using this as a case of leverage. That is not my agenda. I do honestly mourn for those lost. I have been to more soldiers funerals than I care to count and I will remember every last one of them till the day I die. I'm just speaking bluntly about my feelings on what could have prevented or lessened the damages due to events like these.

This is definitely a agree to disagree moment.

It is a crappy tragedy. I just dont believe that open carry is a viable solution.

I know I am not alone in thinking that open carry for civilians on military bases would be a really bad policy.

Hasn't it been demonstrated yet that making any area "gun-free" is an open invitation to any wacko that wants his name in the news? I don't mean any disrespect towards you, but I don't understand how you think this position is defensible.

The guys who are committing these murder sprees do not care whether or not it is legal to carry a weapon to the place where they plan to do their killing, except insofar as it practically guarantees that nobody else there will have a weapon to stop them.

This wasn't directed at you [MENTION=65101]BrianSD_42[/MENTION]. I wanted to point out that just a couple hours after this happened Obama went on TV and, in so many words, revived the gun-control debate. The pro-gun folks usually come out with commentary not long after. And everyone seems more concerned with their own agenda than with the victims or finding real answers.

I knew quite a few active duty service members that had no business being around firearms, and I was in an Infantry unit.

I’m a strong supporter of the 2nd amendment and I own several firearms. I believe every competent law abiding citizen in America should be able to possess and properly use firearms of any type.

That being said, it doesn’t matter. You can arm every person in the country, you can take away every firearm there is. “Evil” will continue to exist and prey upon the unsuspecting.

People need to stop looking for reasons behind crazy and start remembering that at the end of the day we are animals. The difference between us and other animals is simply the human condition and a few right turns on an evolutionary chart.

There is no fix to human beings, we will continue to hurt and destroy and we will continue to nurture and create.... it is in our nature as a species.

To be fair, no one said this thread was about honoring those lost. If anything, the quip about gun rights in the 1st post was a good indication otherwise.
